At Toloka Annotators, we connect smart, curious people from around the world with freelance online tasks that train and improve artificial intelligence.

What we do

The Toloka Annotators platform connects individuals with Generative AI projects from leading tech innovators. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of AI by involving real people from around the world in the development process.

About the Role

Annotation is what helps AI make sense of the world — it’s the bridge between raw data and intelligent understanding. As a Senior Annotator, you’ll play a key role in shaping how AI systems interpret language, images, and information. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide feedback on data quality, and help maintain high annotation standards across diverse projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze data — from text passages and product descriptions to social media posts, news articles, or visual content (such as marketing images and short videos) — ensuring it’s correctly labeled and contextually accurate.
  • Perform quality assurance (QA) checks on tasks completed by other annotators, identifying inconsistencies or labelling errors, and providing constructive feedback to help improve accuracy.
  • Label or classify content according to detailed project guidelines — for example, tagging sentiment in user reviews, identifying medical terminology in clinical texts, or categorizing tone in marketing copy.
  • Evaluate AI-generated content by rating response quality, factual correctness, and tone appropriateness — such as comparing different chatbot outputs or fact-checking generated summaries.
  • Flag problematic or sensitive material, including biased language, misleading claims, or inappropriate visual content, to ensure compliance with ethical and safety standards.
  • Contribute to process improvements, such as suggesting refinements to annotation guidelines, improving workflow efficiency, and mentoring new team members on best practices.

Important note: This is project-based work. Tasks are available only when projects are active. You may be invited to one or more projects depending on your profile and current opportunities.

Requirements
    • You hold or are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD Degree in any professional field.
    • You have advanced proficiency in Korean (C1) and at least English (B2), both written and spoken.
    • Experience in mentoring/teaching/consulting, or editing/reviewing/consulting work in a professional or academic setting.
    • Excellent written communication and ability to give clear, structured and constructive feedback
    • Proven experience in annotation or data labelling.
    • Attention to details and ability to understand and follow instructions.
    • Genuine interest in technology and artificial intelligence.

Benefits

Why this freelance opportunity might be a great fit for you?

  • Get paid for your expertise, with rates that can go up to $23/hour depending on your skills, experience, and project needs.
  • Take part in a part-time, remote, freelance project that fits around your primary professional or academic commitments.
  • Work on advanced AI projects and gain valuable experience that enhances your portfolio.
  • Influence how future AI models understand and communicate in your field of expertise.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
