About MotherDuck

Don’t let the quirky name fool you: At MotherDuck, we’re on a mission to make data warehousing fun, frictionless, and ducking awesome for developers and data practitioners building blazing fast internal and customer-facing analytics experiences. We're building a cloud-hosted version of DuckDB, working hand-in-hand with the creators of the fastest-growing and fastest-improving query engine on the planet. Unlike other databases, MotherDuck was architected to unify local development with cloud operations to bridge the gap between software and data engineering workflows. Our team is a mix of thoughtful, passionate, and empathetic data industry veterans.

What you will do

At MotherDuck, we're building the future of cloud-based data analytics with DuckDB at the core. We're a team that values agency, thoughtfulness, flexibility, and a healthy dose of unorthodoxy. As we grow, we're looking for an FP&A Leader who shares these values and can help us make smarter decisions through rigorous financial analysis—without losing our scrappy, curious spirit.

As our FP&A Lead, you won't just be building models in spreadsheets; you'll be the analytical engine that helps leadership understand our business, allocate resources wisely, and chart our path to success. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves role where you'll have real ownership, the freedom to dig deep into the data, and the responsibility to turn complex information into clear insights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exercise agency: Own the full FP&A cycle including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and board reporting—building frameworks that fit our unique business.

  • Embrace unorthodoxy: Find creative ways to analyze our business without defaulting to traditional SaaS metrics if they don't tell the full story.

  • Practice thoughtfulness: Deliver insightful analysis that goes beyond the numbers—help leadership understand the "why" behind performance and what it means for decision-making.

  • Stay flexible: Build models and processes that accommodate rapid change while maintaining analytical rigor.

  • Partner closely with leadership on strategic planning, resource allocation, and investment decisions

  • Own the monthly/quarterly financial review process and board materials

  • Build and maintain financial models that forecast revenue, expenses, cash flow, and key metrics

  • Drive the annual planning process and quarterly re-forecasting cycles

  • Analyze unit economics, customer cohorts, and operational metrics to inform strategy

  • Support fundraising efforts with investor materials and scenario modeling

  • Collaborate with GTM, Engineering, and Product teams to understand drivers and optimize performance

  • Implement and optimize FP&A tools and dashboards to enable self-service analytics

What you bring
  • 6+ years of progressive FP&A experience, with at least 2 years at a high-growth startup (SaaS preferred)

  • Strong financial modeling skills and deep analytical capabilities

  • Experience building bottoms-up forecasts and top-down strategic plans

  • Comfort working with ambiguous, messy data and creating structure from chaos

  • Technical proficiency: Excel/Google Sheets mastery, SQL, experience with BI tools (Omni, etc.)

  • Understanding of SaaS metrics (ARR, CAC, LTV, burn multiple, etc.)

  • A bias for action, comfort rolling up your sleeves, and ability to move fast without sacrificing quality

  • Strong communicator who can tell stories with data and influence without authority

  • Startup DNA: scrappy, resourceful, and energized by building something from scratch

What people should be saying if you’re doing ducking awesome
  • "Our forecasts are accurate and leadership actually trusts the numbers."

  • "They don't just report what happened—they explain why it happened and what we should do about it."

  • "Board materials are clear, compelling, and tell the story of our business beautifully."

  • "They're not afraid to challenge assumptions or push back when the math doesn't work."

  • "Our planning process is rigorous but not bureaucratic—we move fast but with good data."

  • "They understand the business deeply, not just the financials."

What we provide
  • Feather-ruffling compensation – competitive salary and stock options so you have a stake in our flock’s success.

  • Top-notch healthcare coverage – 100% paid medical, dental, and vision for employees, plus 85% coverage for dependents (because we care about your whole nest).

  • Flexible PTO – take the time you need to recharge, explore, or just have a lazy day by the pond.

  • 401k plan – because even ducks need to plan for the future.

  • Legendary company events – we bring the whole flock together twice a year for unforgettable summits in fun locations, plus 1-2 team gatherings a year to keep our bonds strong.

  • Hybrid work environment – Spend three days a week in the office collaborating with the flock, and work from wherever you’re most productive the rest of the time—whether that’s your home office, a coffee shop, or a peaceful lakeside retreat.

Please Apply

Does this role sound appealing to you, but you’re missing some of the requirements or don’t quite think you’re qualified?  Please apply anyway. Research has shown that underrepresented groups in technology often shy away from roles which aren’t a 100% match. We aim to build a diverse team and will strongly consider applicants who bring many of the requirements plus have other experiences which round out their qualifications.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
