Job Title: Full-Stack Engineer

Location: preference for NY (remote ok)

About float: Our mission is to eliminate the barriers to healthy household finances in America. We’re starting with the 100M+ Americans that can’t access healthy credit because the on time payments they make each month aren’t being reported to the credit bureaus. We’ve started float to close the credit data gap for these folks and build a more financially inclusive world. Join us!

Role Overview: As one of the first engineers at float, you will play a critical role in shaping the technology and product direction of our company. We are looking for a full-stack engineer who is mission-aligned and eager to build innovative and impactful solutions from the ground up. You will work closely with the founders (backgrounds in fintech and AI engineering) to bring the company vision to life, make key architectural decisions, and grow an early-stage startup.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the founding team to understand product requirements and translate them into technical solutions.

  • Design, develop, and deploy full-stack web applications.

  • Make informed architectural decisions to ensure scalability, maintainability, and performance.

  • Co-lead product direction and priorities in a fast-moving environment.

  • Contribute to the overall technical strategy and roadmap of the company.

Qualifications:

  • Strong alignment with float’s mission to improve the financial health of individuals across America, preference for lived experience.

  • Proven experience as a full-stack engineer with proficiency in both front-end and back-end development.

  • Solid understanding of one or more front-end frameworks (e.g. but not limited to React, Angular, Vue) and one or more back-end frameworks (e.g. but not limited to Node.js, Django, Ruby on Rails).

  • Expertise in database design and management (e.g. SQL, NoSQL).

  • Proven experience with cloud services (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and deployment practices (e.g., CI/CD pipelines).

  • Ability to make thoughtful architectural decisions and understand trade-offs.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid team environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in the fintech or financial services industry.

  • Experience with the credit data industry.

  • Familiarity with data analytics and reporting tools.

  • Previous experience working at a startup.

Why join float?

If you're passionate about using technology for good and you love solving challenging, ambiguous problems in creative ways, we’d love to talk to you. We have a team of deeply passionate people committed to making a positive impact.

  • Be a foundational member of a mission-driven company.

  • Hybrid-friendly work environment with an office in San Francisco and satellite offices in New York and New Orleans. The team meets in-person for optional retreats.

  • Opportunity to shape the technology and product direction from the ground up.

  • Work closely with a passionate and experienced founding team.

  • Make a meaningful, positive impact on the financial health of individuals across America.

Application Process: To apply, please send a cover letter and your resume or LinkedIn detailing your relevant experience to [email protected].

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
