Job Title: Founding Engineer - Backend & Data Platform

Salary: $175,000 - $225,000 + Equity

Company Description: Greenline - Fast-growing fintech startup

Job Description:
As a Founding Engineer, you will architect the foundational data platform that unlocks mortgage lending for 16.5 million self-employed Americans. You'll build resilient ingestion pipelines for banking and tax data, design scalable microservices in Postgres, and enable ML-driven insights that transform hours of manual review into minutes of automated processing.

Location: San Francisco, Austin, NYC, or Remote, USA

Why this role is remarkable:

  • Take 0→1 ownership of a greenfield data backbone at a nimble, high-agency startup composed of former Airtable and Opendoor engineers.

  • Directly impact the lives of millions of underserved borrowers by automating complex non-QM mortgage underwriting through innovative AI-driven infrastructure.

  • Receive a founding team title with an aggressive equity package and high architectural influence over the entire product lifecycle and technical roadmap.

What you will do:

  • Design and implement robust data ingestion and normalization pipelines for third-party financial sources like Plaid, the IRS, and accounting platforms.

  • Architect performant backend systems for asset serving, authentication, and complex relational data modeling using Postgres and GraphQL.

  • Productionize ML-driven signals by implementing feature extraction pipelines and integrating classification and anomaly detection models into core workflows.

The ideal candidate:

  • Proven experience building and operating event-driven data systems and complex APIs at early-stage startups where they wore many hats.

  • Expert-level proficiency in relational database design and a deep understanding of data correctness, auditability, and long-lived data contracts.

  • Practical familiarity with ML fundamentals including feature engineering and model evaluation, with the ability to consume and debug ML-driven systems effectively.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
