Founding Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)

Location: Remote / Chicago Preferred
Compensation: This is an early-stage, equity-first founding role. Salary is symbolic for now ($1), with meaningful ownership and upside as we raise and grow.

About Us

We’re building Approach, a new kind of dating app for real-world connection—where you only see others who are at the same place, at the same time, and open to meeting. We believe people are tired of swiping, ghosting, and endless chatting. They want something real. We’re making it happen.

Now we’re looking for a marketing leader who’s ready to help us grow from underground to unavoidable.

What You’ll Own

You won’t “join” the marketing team—you are the marketing team (for now). This is a ground-floor opportunity to define our brand, voice, and presence in the world. You’ll:

  • Build the brand – from tone of voice to visual identity to how we show up in the world

  • Own social – grow and manage TikTok, Instagram, and other channels with a mix of content, community-building, and creative campaigns

  • Develop our growth strategy – test and launch digital, offline, and influencer campaigns to drive downloads and real engagement

  • Partner with the product team – influence product features that impact user acquisition, retention, and virality

  • Plan IRL activations – events, bar promotions, street teams, and creative stunts that get people talking

  • Track performance – know what’s working, what’s not, and how to scale it

You Might Be a Fit If…

  • You’ve built a brand or social presence before—personally or professionally

  • You have 3–5 years of experience in marketing, ideally at a consumer startup

  • You’re obsessed with user psychology, viral loops, and creative storytelling

  • You’re scrappy, self-starting, and energized by building something from 0

  • You have an eye for good design and a sharp, punchy writing style

  • You’re down to experiment, move fast, and treat early traction like a game

Perks

  • Ground-floor equity and leadership role

  • Flexibility and creative freedom

  • A product that’s easy to believe in

  • A team that cares about real-life human connection

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
