About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious Counsel to join our fast-growing fintech team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys solving complex problems, and can quickly and independently translate regulatory requirements into practical business guidance. You will work directly with leadership across product, compliance, operations, and marketing. This is a full-time,  5 day in-office role located in Santa Monica, California. 

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory & Compliance

  • You’ll provide expert guidance on federal and state financial regulations impacting fintech products, including:
    • UDAAP/UDAP
    • FCRA
    •  Reg Z
    • Reg B
    • TCPA 
    • CAN-SPAM
    • Privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, state-level analogues)
    • Emerging Rules/Regulations
    • Familiarity with CFR

       
  • Partner with compliance teams to support regulatory examinations, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Monitor emerging laws and regulatory trends, proactively advising internal teams.
  • Review marketing collateral and websites to ensure compliance with applicable laws. 

Contracts & Commercial Work

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of agreements, including:
    • Vendor and partner contracts
    • Data privacy and security contracts (DPAs)
    • Marketing and affiliate agreements
  • Ensure contract terms align with regulatory, operational, and risk requirements.
  • Be familiar with and provide updates to company terms of use and privacy policies.

Corporate Governance & Transactions

  • Form and manage corporate records for subsidiaries and affiliated entities.
  • Maintain corporate formalities and advise on structuring issues. 
  • Support corporate initiatives including acquisitions, investments and financing transactions. 

Cross-Functional Legal Support

  • Work closely with product, engineering, design, and marketing teams to identify risks and enable compliant innovation.
  • Translate legal concepts into clear, actionable business guidance.
  • Support incident response, fraud strategy, data-governance discussions, and policy development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

     

What We’re Looking For

Core Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school; active member of the State Bar of California in good standing.
  • 3–8+ years of experience in fintech, financial services, or a related regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with: UDAAP, FCRA, TCPA, CCPA/CPRA, CAN-SPAM, Privacy and data-protection standards
  • Experience managing a diverse commercial contracting workload.
  • Experience with corporate formations and transactions. 
  • Ability to work independently and with cross functional clients.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $150,000 - $200,000.  The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, and certifications or other professional licenses held.
