Lead, Royalties & Finance Operations
Stem enables artists to build their businesses. Our tools empower independent musicians and their teams to distribute music, collect royalties from streaming platforms, pay their collaborators, and take out advances on their future earnings.
As the Royalties Lead at Stem, you will play an integral role as the royalties and month-end expert on our team. This is a highly collaborative position and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help build the financial backbone of the music industry. Our ideal candidate will simultaneously ensure Stem’s royalties accounting and reporting is following all music industry best practices as well as collaborate with our team to ensure our clients (independent artists, labels, and their teams) are getting paid monthly and receiving the reporting they need to build sustainable businesses. This role is ideal for someone who has long dreamed of automating much of the manual process around royalties without sacrificing music industry best practices and accuracy.
Most of our company is based in Los Angeles, but we are now a fully distributed workforce, so this position is remote.
What you’ll do:
- Receive and ingest monthly sales files and tie out to cash
- Manage royalties month end, including ensuring distribution fees and splits are applied correctly
- Prepare monthly royalty statements and ad hoc reports
- Pay out all royalties shareholders monthly
- Pay out mechanical royalties quarterly
- Disburse artist advances and prepare advance recoupment statements
- Work closely with account management team at Stem to provide ad hoc reports for our artists and their teams
- Work with product and engineering teams to automate manual month end and royalties processes
- Streaming revenue analysis as needed
- Work with engineering to ingest sales files from new DSPs
- Join calls with account managers to assist our clients with reporting needs and answer questions as needed
Our Ideal Candidate has:
- At least 4 years of experience in royalties or participations
- Comfortable working with large volumes of data in Excel
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A collaborative and team-oriented spirit
- A rigorous attention to detail
- A tendency to include others
- The ability and desire to quickly adapt to new and evolving platforms and technologies
- A passion for helping creators build thriving businesses while retaining ownership of their creative work
- Proficiency with SQL is a plus
