About the Corporate Controller at Headspace:

Headspace is seeking an experienced leader for our Corporate Controller role. This person will lead the accounting team and manage the Controllers group, provide technical guidance, and act as the primary point of contact to outside vendors.

  • Manage all aspects of Accounting, developing partnerships that facilitate early discovery of issues and quick resolutions, and providing feedback and support
  • Strategic planning of team expansion and process improvement for future business growth
  • Oversee and manage the corporate consolidation and reporting of the Headspace entities
  • Set-up and management of international accounting operations
  • Determine, define, and manage new technical accounting areas, e.g. Revenue and Billing, Capitalization and Amortization of Product Development, Stock Based Compensation, Taxes, FX etc., as needed
  • Determine, define, and manage transactional accounting areas, e.g., Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Treasury, Procurement, Payroll, Fixed Assets, Prepaids, etc., as needed
  • Review new contracts and agreements to determine proper accounting treatment
  • Serve as company’s primary authority related to GAAP and IFRS (local reporting standards)
  • Assist external public accounting firm with annual audit
  • Define opportunities to streamline and shorten close, lead related efforts
  • Oversee preparation and completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements 
  • Oversee preparation and distribution of weekly cash flow reporting
  • Prepare footnote disclosures in annual statements (both consolidated reporting and local statutory reporting)
  • Review tax provision calculations (US and foreign)
  • Ensure proper management of stock plan administration and treatment of employee events (grants, exercises, cancellations)
  • Ensure cash management reporting is sufficient and accurate, including management of foreign currency exposure
  • Manage intercompany transactions and ensure proper elimination of intercompany activities at a consolidated reporting level
  • Distill detailed accounting data related to on-going financial performance as well as ad hoc projects and report to management team as needed
  • Take a pro-active role in determining process and accounting requirements to support new business initiatives
  • Ensure that internal controls are effective and efficient
  • Establish an environment of continuous improvement to identify, develop and implement process changes that increase efficiency
  • Provide leadership during accounting software upgrades, new module enablement, and related software development
  • Enhance systems, people and process infrastructure to bring the department to public company standards
  • Drive process automation
  • Oversee payment performance analytics, e.g. decline and account update rates, and manage improvement projects based on analysis results 

What you’ve accomplished:

  • At least 12 years overall accounting experience, CPA required
  • At least 10 years of management experience
  • BA / BS in Accounting or other related discipline
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, IFRS a plus
  • Private company accounting experience required
  • Public company accounting experience required
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting functions including journal entries
  • Experience with NetSuite or other tier I and II accounting software strongly preferred
  • Experience with Zuora or other billing platform strongly preferred
  • Exposure to current ecommerce payment methods including those through app stores
  • Exposure to foreign currency transactions and international operations
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to interact effectively with various levels of staff and management in various departments
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced environment
  • Detailed oriented and driven to do things right
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to independently establish goals to meet objectives
  • Effective in a dynamic environment, adapting to and managing change in a positive and proactive manner

We're located in the heart of Santa Monica on Michigan + Cloverfield, just off the 10 freeway. Bergamont train station is right behind our office.
