About Us:

Modal is building the serverless compute platform to support the next generation of AI companies. We have deeply technical roots and have built up a significant amount of proprietary infrastructure—including our own custom file system, container runtime, scheduler, container image builder, and more—to craft a world-class developer product.

We're a small team based out of New York, Stockholm and San Francisco. In just one year, we've reached 8-figure revenue, tripled our headcount, scaled to support thousands of GPUs, and raised over $32M in funding.

Working at Modal means joining one of the fastest-growing AI infrastructure organizations at an early stage, with many opportunities to grow within the company. Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g. Seaborn, Luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.

The Role:

We’re looking for our first community and events lead. In-person developer events have historically been a very effective channel for Modal. As a company, we invest heavily in creating content that is highly technical and practical for our audience. In-person events have been a meaningful way for us to bring AI builders together and educate the community about the latest best practices in productionizing AI. You can check out some of our past events here: https://luma.com/modal-labs.
The person in this role will be embedded in our growth team and own the end-to-end strategy and execution of community events in the Bay Area. You'll work closely with developer relations, product marketing, and sales to create thoughtful, educational, in-person touchpoints with our developer audience.
In this role, you will:

  • Generate creative new ideas for events big and small, from small leadership dinners to community happy hours to massive conferences.

  • Identify, prioritize, and build relationships with potential event partners in the Bay Area AI ecosystem, whether that's model builders, open-source framework contributors, or investors.

  • Work with marketing and sales to identify the right profiles and segments to create events for.

  • Own the promotion, invite sourcing, and on-the-ground coordination for these events to ensure they are effective.

  • Become a trusted representative and messenger of Modal's product, value, and brand.

  • Set the right GTM objectives and measure outcomes for every in-person engagement we invest in.

Requirements:

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has 3+ years experience working at a tech company in a marketing or marketing-adjacent function.

  • Is excited about getting embedded in the AI developer community (or is a part of it already)!

  • Is energetic, social, and understands the importance of building relationships in person.

  • Is extremely detail-oriented and organized.

  • Is excited about working in-person in the SF office, with travel up to 10% of the time.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
