About the role

We are hiring a Fiction Development Editor to join our content team. In this role, you will review serialized romance and fantasy manuscripts, provide actionable feedback on pacing and character arcs, and help develop book briefs that guide authors from concept to publication.

You will work across multiple titles simultaneously, ensuring stories meet both creative standards and commercial audience expectations. This is a remote, flexible role with long-term collaboration opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Review

  • Review serialized fiction manuscripts and early drafts.

  • Evaluate structure, pacing, and narrative coherence.

  • Analyze character arcs and relationship dynamics.

  • Assess emotional tension and reader engagement.

  • Provide clear, actionable written feedback.

  • Suggest improvements to scenes, dialogue, and plot progression.

Story & Brief Development

  • Participate in creating and refining book briefs.

  • Help define story premises, character profiles, and emotional arcs.

  • Support authors with narrative direction and tone.

  • Ensure consistency with genre expectations and audience preferences.

Quality & Collaboration

  • Maintain consistent quality across published content.

  • Collaborate with writers, editors, and content managers.

  • Support pilot projects and new title development.

Qualifications
  • Experience in fiction editing, writing, or story development.

  • Strong understanding of serialized storytelling.

  • Excellent sense of pacing, tension, and emotional payoff.

  • Ability to balance creative quality with commercial appeal.

  • Strong written communication skills.

  • High level of autonomy and reliability.

Nice to have

Deep knowledge of:

  • Dark romance.

  • Fantasy romance.

  • Dark fantasy romance.

  • Contemporary / modern romance.

  • Genre romance fiction.

  • Familiarity with major web-novel and digital fiction platforms.

  • Experience creating story bibles, outlines, or book briefs.

  • Publishing or digital content background.

Location

Ruby Labs operates within the CET (Central European Time) zone. Applicants from any country are welcome to apply for the position as long as they are located within approximately ± 4 hours of CET. This ensures optimal collaboration and communication during working hours.
