Accepting applications from across New Zealand and remote.

The role / impact

You will lead the delivery of high-impact, customer-focused software solutions that directly shape the practice tools our partners rely on daily. Navigating ambiguity with ease, you will solve complex, open-ended problems with a strong sense of ownership, technical depth, and operational insight.

Driving cross-team initiatives, you will build alignment across disciplines and influence engineering direction through clear communication, data-informed decision-making, and constructive collaboration. Going beyond simply shipping what is asked, you will rethink workflows and use artificial intelligence to build genuinely new value and capability for the team.

The team / how they connect

You will join a collaborative engineering community dedicated to supercharging small businesses by connecting them with big business technology. Working closely with Lead and Principal Engineers, the team applies modern software delivery frameworks to improve system performance, reliability, and developer efficiency. Together, they champion agile practices and bring outside pattern-matching into our ecosystem to proactively solve high-stakes logic challenges.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

  • Building full-stack features using React, Redux, C#, ASP.NET, and SQL Server.

  • Refactoring complex, monolithic systems, balancing legacy WebForms with modern distributed system architectures on AWS.

  • Reimagining everyday engineering workflows by researching, prototyping, and adopting real AI-assisted development tools.

  • Participating in an on-call roster and incident response to help ensure 24/7 product support and reliability.

Where and how you can work

Xero offers a flexible working environment designed to support balance and collaboration. This position operates on a hybrid model out of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, or Brisbane, combining remote work options with collaborative time in our modern office spaces. You will participate in designated team boost days to connect in person, brainstorm, and strengthen team relationships, with occasional travel to Melbourne as required.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

  • You bring deep technical expertise across C#, ASP.NET Core, modern frontend frameworks like React, and SQL Server data modelling.

  • Proven experience in building and implementing AI tools into production environments delivering real impact to the business/ customers

  • A proven background in the architecture, implementation, and refactoring of distributed systems using REST APIs on AWS is essential.

  • Your skillset includes solid experience with CI/CD concepts, automated tooling, and a passion for test-driven development principles.

  • Having a natural instinct to treat artificial intelligence as a tool to completely redesign workflows and create automated agents rather than just a personal productivity add-on will set you apart.

  • Experience building SDKs and internal libraries that enable other teams to seamlessly integrate with your products will be highly regarded.

  • An inclusive approach to mentoring and coaching, combined with a challenger voice comfortable with disagreeing early to help the team design better systems.

Apply even if your experience isn't a perfect match! At Xero, we hire based on your skills, passion, and the unique perspective you can bring to enhance our culture and team.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
