About the Role

We are seeking an experienced technologist and strategist to serve as an Executive Technical Consultant to drive change and engineering effectiveness at mid- to large-sized engineering organizations. As an Executive Technical Consultant, you will drive the end-to-end Uplevel engagement by merging deep technical proficiency, masterful influence and coaching skills with analytical rigor and executive-level storytelling. Your mission is to own the delivery of high-impact outcomes, bring change at the team and executive level, and empower organizations to successfully navigate transformation through data and the Uplevel framework.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing direct client relationships, bringing an expert and opinionated perspective on how engineering should be done in the age of AI, distilling complex datasets into actionable insights, coaching executives and teams, and creating clarity for customers at both the technical and strategic levels. Your work will involve crafting strategic deliverables, business cases, and opinionated technical recommendations that drive action among engineering leadership.

Beyond analysis, you will guide organizations toward higher engineering maturity by scaffolding internal information flows and empowering engineering managers to lead effectively. Unlike traditional consulting, this role requires you to coach and mentor front-line managers on technical topics while also providing strategic guidance and capability-building to senior engineering leaders. This is co-creation, not drop-off-a-slide-deck consulting. A successful candidate for this role can confidently architect a shared context layer as easily as they can recommend metrics for managing effective AI usage. The ability to connect with highly technical individuals on tactical choices and to create compelling, actionable narratives for engineering leaders is critical to success in this role.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the change motion in each engagement — serve as the leader and guide for clients at every stage. Conduct interviews with engineers, evaluate key metrics, and integrate survey results. This position requires you to take full ownership of both the output and the client relationship.
  • Drive technical depth with opinionated recommendations — Transform high-level findings like "improve context capture for AI" into specific, step-by-step roadmaps with concrete responses to implementation objections. Create recommendations that are actionable enough for an engineering team to implement immediately.
  • Coach teams and leaders — Educate, empower, and motivate engineering teams and leaders to use data to drive change. Come alongside engineering managers to build capabilities in engineering fundamentals, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, architectural patterns, quality practices, and related skills. Mentor senior engineering leaders in best practices around organizational change, measurement frameworks, and engineering productivity.
  • Advance our methodology — Integrate direct insights from client engagements to sharpen assessment frameworks, enhance data collection and reporting, and optimize how we create change with clients. Support the Uplevel team in automating and expanding our consulting capabilities.
  • Build thought leadership — Contribute to Uplevel’s differentiated position as an industry leader by developing engineering-focused content and bringing a strong perspective on how to work most effectively in the AI era. Write position papers and contribute to research aligned with engineering productivity and change.
  • Extract and tell compelling data storiesTranslating data into action is the primary objective of this position. You will synthesize diverse outputs—including surveys, interview data, delivery patterns, and platform metrics—into persuasive, executive-level narratives. Your goal is to bring clarity to executives by identifying core insights, establishing a direct link between findings and their business implications, and presenting results in a manner that inspires engineering leaders to act.
  • Feed findings into the product — Synthesize and translate customer pain points and desires into actionable product feedback. Create hypotheses about product functionality and shape the ideas through research and partnership with the Uplevel engineering and product teams.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience implementing technical change with engineering teams
  • Deep hands-on experience in engineering leadership
  • Expertise in platform engineering, DevOps practices, and scaling engineering organizations
  • Strong perspective with proven results on how engineering should be done from a technical perspective, especially in an agentic framework
  • Experience coaching and mentoring teams and executives
  • Demonstrated ability to build executive-grade presentations and business cases from technical and operational data
  • Expertise in data analysis: capability to interpret platform metrics and survey data to reveal the underlying narrative, specifically discerning what may be concealed or misrepresented, knowing what data to emphasize and what signals are noise
  • Proven ability to hold senior client relationships independently
  • Self-directed work style: you can take an engagement context and drive it forward without needing the problem restated or the deliverable scoped for you
  • Genuine interest in the detective work of organizational assessment
  • Collaborative approach to methodology refinement

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
