Role Context

Senior engineering leader for a high-volume, multi-product payments division within a SaaS company. Reports to the CTO; sits on or adjacent to the executive leadership team.

Core Qualifications

Experience

  • 10–15 years in software engineering, with at least 4–6 years in engineering leadership at the director level or above
  • Direct experience owning a payment gateway or payment processing platform at scale — ideally $5B+ in annual transaction volume
  • Background in multi-product SaaS environments, particularly vertical SaaS or embedded payments

Technical Depth

  • Hands-on background in payments infrastructure: gateway architecture, ACH processing, credit card networks, settlement, reconciliation
  • Deep integration experience with major payment processors (Stripe, Worldpay, Braintree, Adyen, or equivalents)
  • Strong cloud engineering foundation (AWS/GCP/Azure); comfort with distributed, high-availability systems designed for transaction peak loads
  • Security-first engineering mindset with understanding of encryption, tokenization, and fraud surface area

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Must have personally led or co-led PCI DSS certification (Level 1 preferred) and recurring audits
  • SOC 2 Type II ownership strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with NACHA operating rules for ACH; SOX and/or HIPAA exposure a plus
  • Track record of audit cycles with clean findings

Leadership Profile

Team Scale

  • Has managed cross-functional engineering orgs of 25–50+ people including software engineers, QA, DevOps/cloud, and possibly security
  • Experience managing distributed or nearshore teams — Colombia, LATAM, or Eastern Europe exposure a strong differentiator

Organizational Influence

  • Operates comfortably as a peer to product, operations, and compliance leaders — not just a delivery executor
  • Can translate technical strategy into business outcomes; fluent in budget ownership ($3–5M+ opex) and ROI framing
  • Has contributed to executive-level strategic decisions, not just carried them out

Delivery & Operations

  • Demonstrated ability to run high-performing teams with strong engineering fundamentals: code quality, CI/CD, observability, incident response
  • Experience with M&A integration or multi-product platform consolidation is a plus given the EverCommerce context

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
