The Community You Will Join

Are you fast and funny enough to keep one step ahead of the next big internet obsession?

HuffPost is seeking an evening/overnight reporter for its trends team. The ideal candidate should be able to identify stories that will explode off the site’s homepage and reverberate across social media. We don’t want a writer who is simply regurgitating what’s already out there. We want a writer who can find unique angles and provide the context our readers need to understand an increasingly complicated world. And, to be sure, a good sense of humor can go a long way.

Trends reporters should have at least three years of professional experience in writing and reporting. The ideal candidate should be a voracious consumer of news and pop culture, be able to aggregate or report three short, well-written pieces per shift, and have a strong sense of headlining and story structure.

This position is for an evening reporter (with shifts starting between 6 pm and 8 pm ET) on Tuesdays through Saturdays. HuffPost also requires trends reporters to be available, when necessary, to work on company and federal holidays. You may also be asked, on occasion, to shift your schedule to help cover major news events.

A Typical Day

  • File three stories or more that meet HuffPost standards on a typical shift
  • Write copy that adheres to HuffPost standards and requires minimal editing
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in covering breaking news
  • Work independently with minimal oversight at hours when the site is understaffed
  • Take assignments from editors across the newsroom as needed
  • Collaborate on live blogs
  • Assist the Front Page, Audience, and Copy teams as needed to promote and distribute HuffPost content as needed

Part of what makes BuzzFeed a pioneer in digital media is our commitment to exploring new ventures that lead to spreading truth and joy. As such, you may be asked to share your knowledge with your colleagues through presentations or trainings, to screen and interview job candidates, or to take part in recruitment or networking events on behalf of the company and be part of a union.

Who You Are

  • Strong grasp of story surfacing tools, traffic-measuring tools, and research tools to identify and pitch stories that are of high interest to our audience
  • An obsessive follower of current events, global news, and popular culture
  • A proven talent in crafting headlines and identifying images that resonate with our audience
  • A strong grasp of SEO, SMO, AP Style, and HuffPost standards
  • Ability to work closely with HuffPost’s audience team, breaking news team, copy desk,  and front page editors in a fast-paced collaborative environment
  • A no-fear attitude to write and report across a broad spectrum of news topics
  • Ability to work independently during hours when the news site is understaffed

Use of artificial intelligence or an LLM such as ChatGPT during the interview process may be grounds for rejection of your application.

Note: BuzzFeed Inc. offers remote/flexible work (unless specified to be required to be in-person) and open to hiring remote candidates who are residents in the following states: CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IL, KY, MA, MD, MI, MS, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, TX, VA, and WA.  For non sales roles, we can also hire in AR, AZ, KS, MO, SC, and VT.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
