Flying Bark Productions is working on exciting projects such as Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix's Stranger Things animated series, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan. 

We are looking for an experienced and visionary Episodic Director to lead the creative execution of individual episodes for our CG animated series. You will be responsible for interpreting the series vision at the episode level and leading a team of storyboard artists to ensure the storytelling, pacing, tone, and performances meet the creative and technical standards of the series.

About the role:

  • Lead the creative execution of assigned episodes, from script breakdown through animatic .
  • Translate scripts into compelling visual storytelling, guiding storyboards, staging, composition, and camera language.
  • Manage and mentor a team of storyboard artists, providing feedback and direction
  • Provide clear and actionable direction to storyboard artists, revisionists, and animatic editor to achieve intended tone, performance, and pacing.
  • Ensure episodes are consistent with the overall style and tone of the series as established by the Series Director and Showrunner.
  • Collaborate with editorial on animatics and provide notes on timing, acting, and story clarity.
  • Work with the CG production team to problem-solve creative challenges within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Incorporate internal and executive notes while maintaining the integrity of the episode’s vision.
  • Partner with production staff to manage episode schedules, deliveries, and revisions.
  • Present storyboard, animatics, and other visual materials to stakeholders for review and approval

About you:

  • 5+ years of experience in animation, with at least 2+ years as an Episodic Director or equivalent role.
  • Strong storytelling sensibilities with a keen eye for visual composition, character performance, and pacing.
  • Proven experience in CG animation production pipelines, with an understanding of layout, lighting, camera, and animation workflows.
  • Proficient in digital storyboarding tools (e.g., Storyboard Pro, Photoshop, Cintiq) and familiar with editing software (e.g., Avid, Premiere).
  • Experience working in a fast-paced episodic production environment.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to give and receive feedback constructively.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Skilled at problem solving creative and technical challenges related to the storytelling process

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working on action-adventure CG animated series.
  • Background in storyboarding or layout supervision.
  • Understanding of cinematography and acting for animation.
  • Familiarity with production tracking tools (e.g., ShotGrid, FTrack).
