Overview

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a small, focused engineering team building licensed music experiences for top fitness, retail, and consumer brands. This is a people-first role for someone who takes delivery seriously, holds a high bar for quality, and knows how to get the best out of engineers.

You'll manage a team of 7 and be responsible for managing sprint execution, driving release quality, and building a team culture where engineers thrive. You'll lead the team’s transition to AI-native development including building a training program, establishing standards, and working alongside engineers until new workflows become second nature

What you'll do

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of a team of 7 engineers comprised of full stack, data, and QA, helping each person grow technically and professionally through regular 1:1s, actionable feedback, and genuine investment in their development.
  • Own sprint health and delivery consistency creating the conditions for the team to plan well, execute reliably, and ship with confidence.
  • Establish and maintain engineering performance standards, including code review practices, testing expectations, and release readiness criteria.
  • Lead the engineering team's transition to AI-first development by building a training program, establishing best practices, and working alongside engineers until new workflows become second nature.
  • Serve as a key stakeholder in shaping company-wide AI policies and best practices, bringing an engineering perspective to how AI tools are adopted responsibly and effectively across the organization.
  • Guide technical discussions, surface risks, and ensure architectural decisions are sound.
  • Actively participate in code reviews and contribute to technical solutions when needed. You’re a hands-on manager who can engage with the codebase.
  • Partner closely with Product to translate roadmap priorities into well-scoped, executable engineering work.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, CX, Sales, Marketing, and Music Affairs.
  • Be able to thrive in a startup environment: love dealing with fast pace, changing needs, and limited resources.

Our stack

Our infrastructure is hosted on AWS. Our backend is a GraphQL API built on Node.js services backed by MySQL, Elasticsearch, and S3. Our web frontend is functional React with TypeScript. We publish SDKs for iOS (Objective-C), Android (Kotlin), web (TypeScript), and React Native (JavaScript). Our deployment pipeline runs on GitHub Actions.

What you bring

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in an engineering management role.
  • A proven coach and mentor. You’re passionate about helping engineers grow and have a track record of developing strong teams.
  • Experience leading a team through AI tool adoption, including building standards and onboarding team members to new workflows.
  • A track record of improving team delivery and raising the bar on engineering quality.
  • Hands-on technical ability. You can engage with the codebase, participate in design discussions, and earn credibility with engineers.
  • Bias toward action, highly collaborative. Comfortable working with the product team to assess solutions to user problems with the goal of balancing impact, efficacy, feasibility, and complexity.
  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders on features and technical strategy.
  • Strong communication skills: you write clearly, give direct feedback, and can translate technical context for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfort operating in a startup environment where priorities shift and resources are finite.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
