What is Verse?

Energy markets are more volatile than ever. Rapid electrification and the rise of AI are driving unprecedented demand for power, while energy costs continue to rise across the globe. For the world’s largest energy buyers, managing energy has never been more complex or more critical.

Verse helps these organizations manage complex power portfolios with confidence by unifying energy data, planning, forecasting, and operations in one tool. Our Energy Cost Intelligence platform, Aria, brings together energy, finance, and operations teams with real-time, finance-ready intelligence—replacing spreadsheets and consultants with precision across the entire energy lifecycle. Built by an expert team of energy buyers, data scientists, and engineers, Verse enables faster, smarter energy decisions that reduce risk and lower energy costs.

The Role

We're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Buyer Solutions, Dispatch Intelligence, and Core Engineering efforts to support features in Aria empowering clean energy buyers to make informed procurement decisions, and optimizing the real-time performance and profitability of distributed energy resources. These features are a core part of Verse's product offerings that empower our users to make informed decisions about their energy costs and emissions. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science and cross-functional stakeholders to define roadmaps, align on priorities, and understand their needs around evaluating clean energy projects, planning their portfolios, managing their risk, delivering key portfolio insights, and navigating energy cost factors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and oversee engineering team execution translating company, product, technology strategy into a clear, sequenced and prioritized delivery plan
  • Establish and maintain clear ownership of work flows, including decision-making on priorities, tradeoffs, and edge cases across individual contributors (ICs) in the engineering team
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers, fostering accountability, clarity, and high performance while coaching them on expectations, scope, and delivery along the way
  • Establish clear team goals, provide regular feedback, and support career development for team members
  • Drive technical excellence and velocity in an AI-native environment, leveraging modern development practices, emerging technologies, and providing technical leadership with architectural guidance, and hands-on engagement to unblock teams and maintain system fluency
  • Anticipate evolving needs and risks, surface dependencies early, and drive follow-through on decisions to balance near-term delivery with long-term system health and managing technical debt intentionally
  • Recruit, interview, and hire exceptional engineering talent
  • Monitor and improve team metrics including delivery velocity, system reliability, and customer outcomes

What We're Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 2+ years of experience managing software engineering teams
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in a technical role in or alongside an engineering organization
  • Track record of delivering production-quality software and leading teams through complex technical projects
  • Experience managing engineers working across frontend, backend, and infrastructure
  • Strong technical foundation with the ability to contribute to architectural decisions and support best engineering practices
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, provide clear feedback, and develop engineering talent
  • Excellent communication skills, proactive mindset, and high emotional intelligence
  • Passion for mission-driven work and commitment to advancing clean energy solutions
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment

What Will Make You Standout (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Background in clean tech, sustainability, electricity markets, or similar mission-driven technology companies
  • Expertise in one or more modern software ecosystems (TypeScript, React, Next.js, Go, Python, cloud infrastructure)
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, data pipelines, or high-scale applications is a big plus
  • Experience managing teams working on complex, data-intensive products or enterprise SaaS platforms
  • Experience building and scaling high-performance teams from the ground up at early-stage companies
  • Track record of elevating team morale and performance through coaching, process improvements, and people initiatives
  • Contributions to engineering culture, developer advocacy, or technical community building
  • History of hiring and developing engineers who have gone on to senior or leadership roles

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
