Summary

Topstep is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team within TRM Engineering, the organization that builds the products funded traders and our internal teams use every day: the trader-facing web experience, the account and onboarding flows, the payments and payout paths, and the internal tooling the business runs on. This is a technical leadership role, not a coordination role. You'll be accountable for the technical quality of your team's systems, for its delivery cadence and outcomes, and for the health and day-to-day running of the team itself, partnering with senior engineers, Product, Design, QA, and infrastructure partners. Occasional hands-on work is welcome but isn't expected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run the team: set direction and standards, set the hiring bar and run the interview process to keep the team well-staffed, plan capacity, and shape how it operates day to day.
  • Lead and develop the team: run 1:1s, real-time feedback, and performance reviews; coach engineers toward individualized growth and address performance issues early; build a culture of psychological safety, transparency, agency, and high standards.
  • Own the technical quality of the team’s systems: guide architecture and trade-off decisions, own the application-level technical strategy, evaluate third-party technology and integrations, shape epics across reliability, tooling, and security, and set the team’s technical direction
  • Drive reliability and operational excellence: own engineering process (PR and merge policy, ticket hygiene, environment consistency, build and versioning, repo standards); own on-call health and incident follow-through for the team’s services; and own the availability and performance of what the team ships, so production problems turn into prioritized engineering work rather than recurring firefighting.
  • Own delivery cadence and outcomes: partner with Product and Design through discovery to shape scope and provide credible estimates; manage capacity, planning, and prioritization across feature delivery, technical investment, and operational reliability; and be accountable for release quality and predictability, not just sprint completion.
  • Partner across the org: collaborate as a peer with the team’s senior engineers and peer Engineering Managers, and work with Product, Design, QA, Support, and infrastructure partners; keep leadership informed on progress, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Own the team’s overall health and effectiveness, including how well it works with the teams that depend on it and the teams it depends on.

Required Qualifications and Key Competencies

  • 7 + years of software engineering experience, including production systems, integrations, and operations.
  • 2 + years of engineering management experience - hiring, setting direction, coaching, and developing engineers across levels (with clear examples of their growth), and shaping how a team operates and delivers.
  • A track record of delivering complex technical work at quality, balancing feature delivery against reliability and technical investment.
  • Experience leading teams that own production systems - on-call, incident response, and reliability.
  • A track record of building inclusive, collaborative cultures grounded in psychological safety, agency, and continuous learning.
  • Technical credibility to guide architecture and trade-off decisions across. TypeScript and Node.js web applications and services, including customer-facing products, API design, and third-party integrations.
  • Hands-on background with TypeScript and Node.js, modern front-end frameworks (React or similar), and cloud infrastructure on AWS, including containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD.
  • Excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences; able to advocate for the team's needs and work well with peers across engineering and the business.
  • A data-informed approach to team health, delivery, and reliability, with good judgment about what to measure.
  • Comfortable leading through shifting priorities and balancing the team's capacity against what the business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fintech or other regulated environments where correctness, auditability, and compliance shape how software gets built.
  • Consumer or customer-facing product development at scale, with a strong sense of user experience and product quality.
  • Experience leading teams that use AI-assisted development tooling well, with a point of view on how it changes team output and code quality standards.
  • Payments, billing, or identity and authentication systems.
  • Microservices and event-driven architectures.

  • Topstep is an engaging working environment that ranges from fully remote to hybrid. We foster a culture of collaboration by keeping cameras on during meetings and maintaining a robust Slack environment for communication.

  • Vacations are encouraged with a bonus for taking 5 consecutive days. Topstep offers a food and groceries budget and contributes towards health and wellness.

New Hire Base Salary Range

  • $190,000 - $230,000 annually.
  • The compensation offered will take into account the internal compensation structure and may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
  • This position is eligible for a performance-based bonus as provided by the plan terms and governing documents.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
