About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like OpenAI, Toyota, Figma, Ramp, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).

About The Role:

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Product Infrastructure team. Product Infra is responsible for evolving the core systems that enable Notion to scale seamlessly, deliver reliable and performant product experiences, and empower our engineering teams to build for the future. As Notion’s customer base grows—from individuals to organizations with 100,000+ users—Product Infra plays a central role in ensuring Notion’s platform is robust, scalable, and delightful.

As the Product Infra Engineering Manager, you will lead and develop a high-performing team of senior engineers, including Staff+ level ICs. You will drive strategic initiatives to scale Notion to support massive workspace sizes, evolve Notion’s Offline Mode toward a local-first experience, and set and execute a long-term strategy for scalability and performance, especially around data loading. You will work cross-functionally to ensure our infrastructure empowers product teams and ultimately delivers value to our users.

What You'll Do:
  • You'll build and manage a diverse and inclusive team of engineers working on foundational infrastructure that supports Notion’s core product features. You'll create a healthy environment for your team that embodies Notion's values.
  • You'll recruit, coach, and develop engineers—ensuring regular feedback and supporting personal and professional growth.
  • You'll facilitate planning, including the prioritization, sequencing, and staffing of work for your team.
  • You'll own execution in your team to develop a steady cadence of delivering value to your users, maintaining a high-quality bar for everything your team ships.
  • You'll work with customer teams and leadership to understand company strategy and set your team's direction accordingly.
  • You'll shape Notion's engineering organization by helping to develop technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization processes, and more.
What We're Looking For:
  • You have experience managing senior engineering teams and Staff+ ICs, and have led teams through scaling challenges.
  • You have a strong background in scalability and performance optimization, with a track record of improving latency, reliability, and interaction responsiveness at scale.
  • You have led complex, end-to-end data loading initiatives and can drive technical strategy for core infrastructure.
  • You create environments that are collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—where engineers do their best work.
  • You have a deep background in product and technology, enabling you to ask the right questions, balance product, tech, and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs.
  • You think rigorously and are prepared to tackle the toughest technical problems, understand trade-offs, and enable teams to make decisions and progress.
  • You thrive in ambiguity and change, especially around organizational structure and the boundaries of your role. You enjoy jumping into whatever areas need attention and learning as you go.
  • You value empathetic and direct communication, particularly when giving and receiving feedback.
Bonus Points:
  • Experience building core data loading APIs (e.g., GraphQL) and frameworks that improve developer velocity.
  • Experience rolling out engineering and management practices—such as code reviews, performance reviews, and levels and ladders—where they didn’t exist before.
  • Experience managing teams across multiple offices or during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.

We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
