Company Description
Swiftly is on a mission to help cities move more efficiently. We are the leading transit data platform for agencies to share real-time passenger information, manage day-to-day operations, and improve service performance. Today, over 180 transit agencies in 12 countries – including LA Metro, MARTA, SEPTA, and MBTA – rely on Swiftly to improve on-time performance by up to 40% and increase passenger information accuracy by up to 50%. The result is better service reliability, increased ridership, and more efficient transit operations.

Even though Swiftly's HQ office is located in San Francisco, CA, we are open to candidates in most locations across the U.S. as well as Ontario and British Columbia, Canada. At this time we are unable to provide Visa sponsorship.

Engineering at Swiftly
Engineering at Swiftly is not only about writing code – we believe in creating empowered product teams that work together to conceptualize new features and bring them to life. Each team aims to strike a balance between delivering incremental improvements, creating prototypes to test new ideas and mitigate risks, and building scalable software using industry best practices. We’re guided by a mission to positively impact transit riders, and we embrace humility and intentionality in how we make technical decisions so that we best meet our customers’ needs.

The Role
Swiftly is looking for an Engineering Manager to join a new cross-functional product team. Your team will ideate, discover, design, and deliver products that seamlessly integrate with Swiftly’s tools that enable transit agencies to run effective operations. You’ll guide your team in embracing new technologies to deliver an innovative, differentiated experience.

We seek Engineering Managers who are curious about problems to solve and orient toward impact by being flexible in their specific contributions to help their team succeed. Technical experience across cloud software, people management experience, team leadership experience, and a drive for excellence and continuous improvement will differentiate you. Your work will ultimately bring tangible, real-world-impacting products to transportation agencies and transit riders.

We encourage you to apply if you meet half or more of the requirements and are excited to learn about the rest. Above all else, we value candidates with a growth mindset, the aptitude to learn, and strong motivation to deliver impact to customers. If this is exciting to you, we'd love to talk!

What you'll do

  • Partner with the team’s Product Manager, Designer, and Engineers to understand customer needs, define impactful solutions, set milestones and goals, and deliver valuable products to market
  • Facilitate technical discovery, translating rapid learning into product designs and guiding engineers as plans solidify
  • Guide the team to balance technical excellence with rapid delivery, evolving practices as products scale
  • Act as a trusted technical mentor and partner, while guiding the architecture and contributing hands-on when most valuable to the team
  • Proactively seek feedback and communicate progress, learnings, and blockers to drive alignment across teams
  • Manage team members with a focus on enabling a supportive, inclusive, growth-oriented, and outcome-focused culture on the team
  • Create an environment where your direct reports are proud to work at Swiftly, as measured by employee retention and employee satisfaction scores

What will set you up for success

  • You have 3+ years of experience in team leadership and people management
  • Proven experience guiding teams toward outcomes and delivering end-to-end products in cloud-based SaaS environments
  • Experience taking a product or feature from concept to launch and scaling it for broader use
  • Strong ability to support team execution by clarifying goals and breaking down work effectively
  • Comfortable applying modern AI tools and techniques in the software development lifecycle to accelerate development
  • Broad experience across the stack (frontend, backend, data). Bonus if you have experience with AWS, JavaScript/Vue.js, Postgres, Java
  • You seek and internalize feedback (a core Swiftly value!) and approach technical debates with humility
  • You are excited to be part of a mission-driven company improving public transit. Regardless of your why, it is important that you care about the work we do

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
