About the Job:

We’re looking for two seasoned Engineering Managers to each lead and grow a team of talented full-stack engineers. In these roles, you’ll balance technical leadership and people management as you drive the development of impactful user-facing features and foster a high-performing, collaborative engineering culture. You’ll work closely with product, design, and backend teams to create delightful and performant web experiences.

Each Engineering Manager would be responsible for a single Feature Management team:

  • One team is laser-focused on developers and the core experiences that developers encounter while feature flagging. This team owns the flag targeting experience which is fundamental to the most critical workflows in feature management.

  • The second team is fixated on large enterprises and ensuring that the Feature Management product and platform are capable in meeting the scaling needs of the largest Enterprise organizations. This team drives wall-to-wall expansion opportunities by resolving enterprises' scaling requirements (e.g. approval workflows or efficient role-based access controls).

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the portfolio of your team’s work, appropriately managing everyone’s time and assigning them to the highest priority work.

  • Help your team make design and architectural decisions to ensure success.

  • Anticipate the growth of our service and keep your parts of the service healthy.

  • As part of our you-build-it-you-run-it culture, all developers may be responsible of support applications in production, including on-call.

Along with your colleagues in Product Management and Design, you will:
  • Lead and mentor a team of full-stack engineers through hiring, coaching, and performance management.

  • Partner with Product and Design to define a roadmap that balances feature delivery, operational health, and bug fixing as well as scope new features.

  • Guide architectural decisions and contribute to code reviews and technical designs.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, continuous learning, and inclusivity.

  • Help your team understand their mission and how they fit in with the overall business goals.

  • Advocate for the team’s technical needs and ensure alignment with company-wide goals.

  • Stay current with technologies and software development trends, and drive their adoption where appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in a formal engineering management role.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience building modern web applications.

  • Experience guiding technical architecture and growing engineering teams in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ability to track and drive metrics, and the wisdom to understand what they can and can't tell you.

  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • A thoughtful, empathetic approach to leadership and collaboration.

Pay:

Target pay ranges based on Geographic Zones* for Level M2:

  • Zone 1: San Francisco/Bay Area or New York City Metropolitan Area (if not Bay area specific role): $187,000 - $240,000**

About LaunchDarkly:

Modern software delivery was supposed to be the foundation for a thriving digital business but reality has proven otherwise. Slow, inefficient development cycles, costly outages, and fragmented customer experiences are preventing developers from building their best software. The LaunchDarkly platform helps developers innovate on new features faster while protecting them with a safety valve to instantly rewind when things go wrong. Developers can target product experiences to any customer segment and maximize the business impact of every feature. And by gradually rolling out new application components, they escape nightmare "big-bang" technology migrations.

The LaunchDarkly platform was built to guide engineers to the next frontier of DevOps by:

  • Improving the velocity and stability of software releases, without the fear of end customer outages
  • Delivering targeted experiences by easily personalizing features to customer cohorts
  • Maximizing the business impact of every feature through the ability to experiment and optimize
  • Coordinating the release and optimization of software to provide consistent experiences across mobile platforms and device types
  • Improving the effectiveness and productivity of engineering teams, by providing insights into engineering cadence and stability

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
