About the role

As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you’ll lead a talented team of engineers to develop the next generation of Thatch’s financial infrastructure.

The Foundations team is building the abstractions and automations that allow for every Thatch member to pay for the insurance plans and expenses that fit their specific healthcare needs, while creating a seamless experience for employers to manage their benefits program at scale.

Our focus is architecting flexible data models, integrating with carriers and financial partners, and optimizing automations to manage millions of dollars of transactions. We’re looking for an engineering manager who combines strong technical experience with a passion for empowering their team to achieve exceptional outcomes.

If multiple engineering roles might be a fit for you, apply to any one, and we’ll work together to find the best match.

What you'll do
  • Provide mentorship and support to engineers on the team, including giving feedback.
  • Design scalable technical systems along with other engineers.
  • Coordinate prioritization and assignment of engineering projects to ensure we’re shipping a high quality, maintainable product.
  • Collaborate with other functions to align on priorities and identify areas of opportunity.
  • Scale the team by recruiting talented engineers.
  • Ship code that advances the team’s goals.
Background we're looking for
  • 6+ years as a full-stack or backend software engineer, including experience as a tech lead or engineering manager.
  • Understanding of best practices for building scalable, resilient systems and tooling.
  • Experience with recruiting, including designing interview loops and sourcing candidates.
  • Excitement around working with internal and external cross-functional partners.
  • We hire for potential — even if you don't meet all the criteria listed here, we encourage you to apply!
Experience we'd be particularly excited about
  • Experience building large scale financial or healthcare systems.
  • Experience working directly with external partners for complex integrations.
What to expect

We interview rigorously based on integrity, talent, and drive; the trust we display in our teammates is a reflection of the confidence we have in this process. We aim to evaluate the things you’ll do daily as best we can, and we move quickly — the entire interview process is typically complete within 2 weeks.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
