Healthcare quality is declining and soaring costs are crushing American families and businesses. At Garner, we’ve developed a revolutionary approach to evaluating doctor performance and a unique incentive model that's reshaping the healthcare economy to ensure everyone can afford high quality care. By providing organizations relief from surging healthcare costs, we've experienced rapid adoption in the market and have more than doubled our revenue annually over the last 5 years, becoming the fastest growing company in our space. To support our continued growth, we're expanding our team by over 50% each year, seeking exceptional talent to shape our unique, award winning culture (for example, USA Today Top Workplaces 2025) designed to cultivate teamwork, trust, autonomy, exceptional results, and individual growth that creates an inflection point in your career.

About the role:

Garner's mission is to transform the healthcare economy, delivering high-quality and affordable care for all. By helping employers restructure their healthcare benefits to provide clear incentives and data-driven insights, we get employees to higher quality and lower cost healthcare providers. The result is that patients get better health outcomes while doctors are rewarded for practicing well, not performing more procedures. We are backed by top-tier venture capital firms, are growing rapidly and looking to expand our team.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Management team that builds and operates systems that move, process, aggregate, store, and analyze the company’s most critical shared datasets. This role reports to the Engineering Director, Data Ecosystem.

  • Build and operate scalable, resilient data systems contributing to the target state data architecture.
  • Enforce rigorous and standardized data modeling and governance practices.
  • Contribute to developing a world-class data platform that supports data science, analytics, product, and engineering needs across the company.
  • Influence relevant product and engineering roadmaps to ensure all data systems interoperate with a unified data ecosystem and oversee seamless migrations as necessary.
  • Champion and ensure the privacy and security of our users’ data.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to your team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Mentor, grow, and recruit Garner’s next generation of engineering leaders.
What you will bring to the team:
  • 7+ years of experience working in the software engineering industry.
  • 4+ years of experience working in a data engineering function.
  • 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
  • 2+ years of experience building big data systems handling at-scale data ingestion, processing, and/or storage.
  • 2+ years of experience working with data governance practices.
  • Expert in dimensional modeling, schema design, and storage/query optimization in cloud-based environments (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business requirements into a well-executed technical roadmap.
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Argo, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Spark, Metaflow, DBT, and Soda.
  • Experience working with data science platforms, machine learning infrastructure, or data governance systems.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP).
  • Experience managing regulated data is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (e.g., HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to inspire and lead a high-performing team.
  • A willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success
  • Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment
  • A desire to be a part of our mission to improve the U.S. healthcare system
Compensation Transparency:

The target salary range for this position is $225,000 - $240,000. Individual compensation for this role will depend on various factors, including qualifications, skills, and applicable laws. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
