About Reach Security:

Reach Security (https://reach.security) builds self-driving cybersecurity. Reach employs the first generative AI for cybersecurity to oversee an organization's current security stack, aiming to achieve the best possible security posture with the products already in use.

About the Role:

We are seeking an Engineering Manager (Applications) to lead the team responsible for building and scaling the applications layer of Reach Security. This role blends hands-on technical leadership with higher-level strategy and execution. You will remain engaged in the code while also guiding architectural decisions, driving project execution, and shaping the long-term direction of our applications. The team’s work spans several critical areas, including building alerting systems that detect configuration drift in cybersecurity policies, developing customer-facing APIs that expand how users interact with our platform, applying natural language processing to interpret and act on user requests, and creating a user interface that allows for deep data exploration into an organization’s security posture.

The ideal candidate is a motivated problem solver who prioritizes high-quality solutions and thrives in environments of ambiguity. You will play a pivotal role in setting technical direction, establishing engineering best practices, and ensuring that projects are delivered with both reliability and scale in mind. Beyond strategic leadership, you will lead by example—writing code, conducting design and code reviews, and tackling complex technical challenges—while also building and mentoring a high-performing team. This role requires balancing engineering priorities with business needs, fostering a culture of accountability and innovation, and ensuring the software we deliver is dependable, maintainable, and of the highest quality.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers focused on applications (UI, APIs, alerts, greenfield products).

  • Balance hands-on contributions (architecture, code reviews, technical design) with management responsibilities.

  • Drive execution of projects from planning to delivery, ensuring timelines, quality, and stakeholder alignment.

  • Establish and refine engineering processes around productivity, quality tracking, incident management, and performance recognition.

  • Hire and develop top technical talent across different seniorities, acting as a bar raiser in interviews.

  • Provide mentorship, set clear expectations, and manage performance across both high and low performers.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with product and design to deliver user-facing features with high impact.

  • Contribute to long-term application architecture and system design decisions.

  • Guide the team through production issues and ensure operational excellence.

Success in this role requires:
  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, with proven success leading backend or application engineering teams.

  • Prior experience as a Staff or Principal IC, ideally in backend engineering.

  • Strong system design and architecture skills, with the ability to guide tradeoffs and challenge designs.

  • Deep database knowledge and comfort with scaling data-intensive applications.

  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern backend ecosystems.

  • Experience delivering B2B SaaS products at scale.

  • Track record of building, mentoring, and retaining high-performing teams.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to different stakeholders.

  • Experience working in mid-to-late stage startups; cybersecurity experience is a bonus.

  • Must be a US citizen or Green Card holder.

Ways to stand out:
  • Demonstrated success leading application teams at a cybersecurity company.

  • Strong perspective on hiring philosophies, talent identification, and bar-raising practices.

  • Experience defining team makeup and growth strategies across levels and specialties.

  • Proven methods for tracking team productivity, quality, and performance recognition.

  • Established practices for managing production issues and distractions without disrupting long-term goals.

  • Experience shipping greenfield applications, particularly in AI-driven domains.

Work arrangement:
  • Competitive salary and equity.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Remote work flexibility.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
