In this role, you will define and drive the engineering strategy for Reddit’s Ads Targeting products—solutions critical to scaling our business and serving tens of thousands of advertisers. You will develop machine learning–powered features that identify and target highly qualified users and content, thereby maximizing outcomes for a diverse group of advertisers. Ads Targeting products rely on rich user, content, and advertiser models that accurately match users with campaigns. We are looking for an industry leader in machine learning recommendations, optimization, and marketplace dynamics, with a strong technical background, solid business acumen, and excellent cross-functional stakeholder management skills.

The ideal candidate recognizes the value that Ads bring to our users, advertisers, and Reddit. As the Machine Learning Manager for the Ads Targeting Modeling team, you will work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Data Scientists to:

  • Define the vision and product strategy for Ads Targeting Modeling.
  • Optimize existing targeting products.
  • Develop new targeting solutions to reach relevant audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Vision & Strategy: Lead the development and optimization of first-party and automation targeting products that will scale with our ads business over the coming years. You will have ample opportunity to shape a technical vision with significant business impact.
  • Execution & Quality: Oversee your team’s roadmap execution, ensuring consistent, predictable, and high-quality delivery. You will prioritize both planned initiatives and emergent needs, coach individual contributors and tech leads in project management, empower your team to work autonomously, and proactively identify and communicate risks.
  • Recruiting: As the Ads Targeting Modeling team expands rapidly, you will be responsible for scaling your team by identifying needs, writing job descriptions, sourcing, interviewing, and closing candidates, with strong support from our recruiting team.
  • Career Development: Assist engineers in setting career goals and creating development plans to achieve them. You will continually seek opportunities to push your team beyond their comfort zones and transform potential into leadership.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of experience supporting and growing ML engineering teams, ideally having scaled a team by over 100%.
  • A proven track record in building and shipping large-scale, end-to-end machine learning products.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: Machine Learning, NLP, Ranking, Search Engines, Recommender Systems, or Knowledge Graphs.
  • Experience managing teams, including hiring, onboarding, and professional development.
  • Demonstrated success in developing products from 0 to 1 as well as scaling existing product lines.
  • Strong technical skills; while you are capable of solving complex problems yourself, you prefer to guide your team in addressing challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a fully remote environment and communicate complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with data-driven decision making.
  • Prior exposure to developing and executing multi-year technical strategies.
  • A passion for building healthy, productive teams and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders (Product Management, Product Marketing, Data Science, Sales, etc.).
  • Management experience in the advertising domain.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits
  • 401k Matching
  • Workspace benefits for your home office
  • Personal & Professional development funds
  • Family Planning Support
  • Flexible Vacation (please use them!) & Reddit Global Wellness Days
  • 4+ months paid Parental Leave
  • Paid Volunteer time off

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
