The team

The Route Engineering team develops next-generation technologies that change how millions of consumers have a delightful post-purchase experience. Route Engineers have backgrounds in distributed systems design and development, large-scale data storage and processing systems, UI design, mobile, and much more — but what unites this talented team is a passion for the Route mission to connect the world's commerce through our suite of innovative products.

The opportunity

Our thriving business demands scalable systems to support thousands of merchants. This role offers the chance to lead a team focused on our core backend services and beyond.

You will contribute to some of the most important products we have at Route. Reporting to the head of engineering, you have a highly visible role with a lot of impact. What you’ll do

• Collaborate between Engineers and Product teams to make sure there is streamlined communication.
• Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
• Mentor team members on engineering best practices, design, and coding standards
• Embody a culture of innovation, transparency, and radical candor
• Ensure the technical success of the most important products at Route while setting the technical strategy for the team.
• Pioneer the integration of AI tooling to enhance team capabilities.
• Develop intelligent strategies to mitigate cloud expenditures.

What we’re looking for

• 7+ years of relevant work experience including 3 years of management experience
• Strong familiarity with AI engineering (ie. Spec-Driven development, RAG, MCP)
• Experience architecting and developing large scale systems
• Current hands on experience with one or more general purpose languages, e.g. Go, Java, Python, Javascript, Kotlin
• Interest and ability to learn other languages as needed
• Experience with Go, JS
• Experience budgeting and monitoring AWS Infrastructure
• BS/BA degree in Computer Science, similar technical field preferred

Pay Transparency

Salary for this role: 

National: $176,000 - $186,000

San Francisco Bay Area: $227,000 -$240,000

Los Angeles/ Orange County: $201,000 - $213,000

Brazil: $87,000 - $92,000

Costa Rica: $106,000 - $116,000

The cash compensation above includes base salary, and is not reflective of potential commission for employees in eligible roles, or annual bonus targets under Route’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, all Route employees are eligible to participate in Routes equity incentive plan to receive stock options per the terms of the agreement. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are based on a few different factors unique to each candidate, including their career level, skills, experience, specific geographic location qualifications and other job-related reasons.
