THE PURPOSE:

The Tooling Design Engineer will be a part of the Manufacturing Process Development team which is responsible for defining how hyperloop sub-systems are produced from early prototyping to mass production. You will work closely with Process Development Engineers to develop and implement robust manufacturing tooling related to manufacturing and installation.

THE ROLE:

As the Tooling Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and build of tooling for a wide variety of projects for development, test, manufacturing, and installation. You are an integral member of the Manufacturing Process Development department and will directly work with engineers, vendors, and technicians.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Working with internal customers to define requirements and design needs
  • Designing and building of tooling such as molds, press tooling, sheet metal tooling, die casting dies, forging dies, rubber and plastic extrusion dies
  • Designing and building of assembly jigs and fixtures
  • Responsible for proper sizing and design of mechanical components
  • Managing and coordinating outside tooling vendors for timely delivery of projects
  • Building and testing of prototype tooling, soft tooling and hard tooling design
  • Perform other duties as assigned

THE CANDIDATE:

As the Tooling Design Engineer, you:

  • Are an experienced engineer with demonstrated talent and capability in mechanical design
  • Contain a strong grasp of engineering physics and mechanical intuition, as well as familiarity with standard manufacturing and fabrication processes
  • Possess good communication and organizational skills as you will be collaborating with a cross functional team
  • Should exhibit demonstrated experience taking projects from conceptualization, through detailed design, overseeing build, and into implementation

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated talent and track record as a Tool Designer (at least 2+ years of experience)
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) practices
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and methodologies 
  • Proficient in 3D model generation, component, and assembly print generation 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. or higher in an engineering field
  • 5+ years experience as a Tool Designer
  • Experience using Siemens Unigraphics NX 8 or higher
  • Experience using PLM / PDM software such as Teamcenter
  • Machine design and machine integration experience
  • Machine shop experience
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Designing press tooling, sheet metal tooling, and stamping tooling for metal parts
    • Designing fixturing and hard tooling for manufacturing
    • Designing tooling for plastics, composites, and ceramics
    • Designing tool for large scale components
