  • Lead the mechanical design, testing, and procurement of subsystems within the vehicle, including the chassis, structure, mechanisms, or suspension
  • Leverage design experience to create and approve solutions to meet challenging requirements
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and schedule work with those involved to deliver on time
  • Review analysis of the design, including FEA results, and approve design releases
  • Oversee CAD modeling and integration efforts
  • Own the definition, scoping, execution, and delivery of technology development tests and initial prototypes
  • Work with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely build and delivery of functional hardware, report on status to leadership

  • Develop team guidelines, processes and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering design in all products; leverage industry best practices
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance for junior engineers
  • Direct and review work of external vendors and engineers

THE CANDIDATE:

  • Strong intuition and knowledge within mechanical system designs, from first principles concepts through design of production hardware
  • Ability to lead in a technically-uncertain environment
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced engineering environment, make decisions, and effectively lead tasks and meet challenging deadlines

  • Knowledge of attachments and joints (bolts and screws, pins, welding, joint stiffness)
  • Deep knowledge of mechanics of materials (stress, strain, stiffness, torsion, bending, buckling, structural shapes)
  • Knowledge of general structural materials (carbon and alloy steels, aluminum)
  • Proficient level skill in at least one CAD package, strong working knowledge of GD&T
  • Working familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (common constraints and load types and their behavior, a strong sense for good approximations of physical situations, basic meshing)
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods
  • Knowledge of dynamic mechanical systems and basic structural dynamics (damping, stiffness, resonance, modes and mode shapes, transient response)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience taking a mechanical design from concept through release, build, test and to production on one or more occasions
  • Experience leading a small team of mechanical designers
  • Experience with a completed lifecycle of design, fabrication, testing, and certification of a human rated aerospace structure
  • Hands on experience validating and verifying mechanical systems using laboratory and in-field testing
