WHY WE NEED YOU

As VH's Senior Vice President - Engineering, you will report directly to our CEO and serve in a key senior leadership role as an operational expert driving VH towards accomplishing our near-term technical goals.   

You will have overall responsibility for driving the delivery of engineering and innovation processes and the development of new technologies, services, and systems. You will also serve as a key member of the VH Leadership Team and will oversee our engineering operations to ensure that we meet our technology productivity, growth and financial objectives.  

You will work in partnership with our Chief Technology Officer (CTO) on our strategic technical plan. You will also collaborate with other key internal partners, including our Vice President - Program Management for effective resource and execution planning, Director - Procurement for supplier and vendor relationships, and Vice President - Project Development for our Hyperloop Certification Center (HCC) construction plan. 

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in providing strong management and execution capability to the engineering function responsible for delivering on our technology requirements. Your primary goals focus on our technical proof-of-concept delivery (First Flight), meeting other engineering milestones, and overseeing technology implementation, planning, and adoption.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Deliver the technical proof of concept (First Flight) which includes other technical development activities deemed necessary in parallel and support of First Flight
  • Effective management and execution of the technical plan including budget, schedule, people managementand prioritization of engineering tasks
  • Responsible (with VP - Program Management) for communications on the progress of the program internally and with Board of Directors/Investors
  • Work closely with internal partners to create and gain coalescence behind a robust and actionable technology strategy and road-map
  • Serve as a key member of several internal management committees which require active engagement, ongoing leadership and preparation which include the Senior Leadership TeamStrategic Management CouncilEngineering Milestone Review and VH Board Meetings
  • Builds strategies to ensure operational effectiveness of the team, including establishing overall direction, needed future capabilities to support execution
  • Strengthen and provide leadership to the talent base within the engineering organization, creating opportunities for growth and development of the engineering team
  • Maintain appropriate product documentation, design standards, and related material specifications are developed
  • Assure that efforts to improve the efficiency of the Engineering teams are emphasized through creative organizational management, effective use of engineering tools, appropriate training and continuous improvement
  • Take an active role in identifying key engineering processes and implement operating standards that drive consistency and organizational improvements across the department
  • Provide oversight on the execution of new product requirements, prototype qualification test requirements and to resolve product performance deficiencies
  • Inspire and empower a global team of highly professional and technical engineering organizations to engagement, empowerment and effective collaboration
  • Lead a team of highly talented technical and professional engineers to assure that current product support, future product development and technical support for customers are addresses
  • Align with VP - Project Development on HCC road-map and engineering interdependencies
  • Ensure test capabilities are aligned to program and product needs and ensure cost effective and schedule effective utilization of assets
  • Ensure high technical competence of the engineering team is maintained and developed
  • Ensure current and accurate costing in conjunction with Finance
  • Establish overall engineering budget

WHAT YOU'VE DONE

  • 15+ years of engineering design, development and commercialization in aerospace, transportation, or other advanced technology field
  • 10+ years of management/ leadership experience
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business, or another relevant field or equivalent work experience
  • Business-driven technology leader who has a successful background in program execution
  • Demonstrated track record of executing on a technology road-map and vision in a pragmatic manner
  • Seasoned front-line manager with a track record of building collaborative and highly engaged culture with leaders and teams, and significant experience in assessing talent needs, managing performance with a high sense of accountability
  • Proven ability to execute technology development and process improvement
  • Proven ability to lead, inspire and engage a team of highly professional and technical engineering professionals to greater levels of collaboration, development and performance
  • Experience and success with operating in and engaging a global organization with high growth
  • Building a function scaling, from 100/200 to 500/1000, preferably within a startup or high growth environment
  • Experience completing Product Development / Product Certification lifecycle

NICE TO HAVE

  • Proven track record of demonstrated success in delivering transportation or related technology on-time and on-budget
  • Strong experience building and executing operational plans from a longer-term technology vision
  • Ability to communicate effectively across various constituent groups including employees, vendors, executive teams and board members
  • Considerable experience managing through complex engineering challenges, leveraging internal talent and available resources
  • Demonstrated capability to develop processes and technology platforms to be driven across a diversified group of stakeholders and internal teams
  • Extensive leadership experience, preferably especially in a multi-site organization
  • Bringing new products to market
  • Experience developing a safety-critical, certifiable system
