THE PURPOSE:

• The Virgin Hyperloop One Pod team is responsible for designing and delivering the vehicle all hyperloop passengers will travel in. The Pod team has primary ownership of the vehicle’s structures, thermal management systems, interior, and environmental control and life support systems. We’re a multidisciplinary, cross-functional team that designs and integrates numerous systems across the pod.
• The Thermal Management Team is responsible for providing the systems which maintains all heat-producing components on the pod. This system consists of the distribution of coolant to components as well as the means by which heat is rejected from the pod.

THE ROLE:

• Responsible for oversight of the hardware elements of the pod thermal management system.
• Management of component level engineers on the pod thermal management team.
• Provides oversight and coordination for the thermal engineers across the various hardware teams (motor, power electronics, etc.).
• Leverage industry experience to transition from conceptual system-level design to detailed hardware specifications and implementation for the pod thermal management system.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

• Broad range of knowledge from first-principles physics and thermodynamic concepts to applied knowledge of hardware and implementation.
• Ability to thrive in a technically uncertain environment
• Ability to work in a fast-paced engineering environment, make decisions, and effectively lead tasks and meet challenging deadlines

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

• B.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering or related field.
• Experience with the design and implementation of a production-level multi-component thermal management system.
• Flow network hardware and control experience within an aerospace, automotive, or electric vehicle application.
• Familiarity with commercial specification and procurement of production-level thermal hardware (make vs. buy trades, COTS vs. custom, typical lead times, etc.).
• Experience with thermal system modelling software (Kuli, GT-Suite, Simulink SimScape, or similar).
• Understanding of thermal modelling at various levels of fidelity (1-D reduced order component models, thermal networks, 2-D and 3-D thermal FEA).
• Experience with validation and verification of thermal systems using laboratory and in-field testing.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Experience with vacuum environment cooling (satellite, manned spacecraft, etc.)
• Experience with high-voltage battery cooling for electric vehicle or energy storage applications
• Experience with life support or passenger HVAC systems
• Familiarity or experience with multi-phase thermal management technologies (heat pipes, pumped two-phase, vapor compression heat pumps, phase change materials)
• Excellent project management experience
