Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL)has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
The Photonics Technology Department is seeking a Senior Member of Technical Staff to engage in research in the Atomic Clocks Technologies section, primarily in atomic physics and timekeeping. This individual will be responsible for contributing to research projects within the section's technical portfolio.The ideal candidate will be able to collaborate with a team of research staff, contribute to novel scientific and applied physics research, and interact with customers to drive innovation and solve problems.This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA.
What You'll Be Doing
- As part of the Atomic Clocks Technologies section in the Photonics Technology Department, you will play a critical role in supporting Aerospace's ability to provide technical timekeeping guidance to a wide range of space programs and customers
- You will support 3-5 customers in a variety of fields from precision timing analysis to on-orbit clock evaluation and execution of experiments in atomic clock testbeds and related technologies
- S/he will engage primarily in collaborative research, development, prototyping, and analysis activities aligned with the technical expertise of the section
- Research and develop analysis tools and techniques for high precision clocks and timing
- Perform tasks that may include evaluation of atomic clock and timekeeping system performance and development through atomic physics, phase noise simulation and analysis, and optical time transfer
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD from an accredited program in a STEM field or equivalent
- Typically (5) years of experience in a research laboratory environment in atomic clocks, atomic physics, lasers, sensors, nonlinear optics, or related areas
- You should have strong interpersonal skills, which include mentoring and collaborating with other employees to optimize research progress and drive technical innovation
- Willing to travel domestically/internationally, approx. one time/year
- This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Subject matter expertise in atomic clocks and demonstrated understanding of current state of the art in atomic clocks and timekeeping
- Relevant experience or education in laboratory experimentation, developing test strategies, experiment design, and hardware integration
- Experience with LabView, Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, C/C++, etc.
