WHY WE NEED YOU

The Electromagnetic Systems team is responsible for the design and development of the Virgin Hyperloop’s electromagnetic actuators. These systems are designed by a highly cross-functional team of exceptional engineers in the areas of Electromagnetics, Mechanical Design & Analysis, Thermal Design & Analysis, Insulation Design, Materials Science, Testing and Electrical System Modeling. We are seeking candidates with broad skillsets and various levels of experience to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals and work on one of the most challenging transportation applications on Earth, from right here at our Los Angeles facility.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Work under minimal supervision to support the mechanical design of complex sub-systems (including the electromagnetic engines such as the levitation and propulsion systems), throughout the entire product development cycle.
  • Create and maintain CAD models of components and assemblies for the electromagnetic engines in Unigraphics NX
  • Generate manufacturing drawings with GD&T and manufacturing best practices
  • Analysis and verification of preliminary and detailed design with the use of hand calculations and FEA
  • Create and maintain functional tolerance stack-ups to ensure manufacturability and that requirements are met
  • Work with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely completion of functional hardware
  • Work with the Manufacturing team throughout the product development cycle to ensure the product is designed with DFM, DFA and system serviceability

WHAT YOU'VE DONE

  • B.S, M.S. or Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with Siemens Unigraphics NX (or similar CAD software)
  • Ability to learn quickly, make decisions and work independently to meet challenging deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical challenges and present solutions in a clear concise manner, both written/illustrated and verbally
  • Experience with a range of manufacturing and fabrication methods, preferably for both production and prototyping volumes
  • Experience with the detailed mechanical design of systems that require tolerancing to ensure fit, assembly & performance
  • Sound knowledge of mechanics of materials and engineering principles
  • Proficiency in standard drafting practices (preferably using GD&T)
  • Dynamic and creative: you thrive in a fast-paced environment where several interdependent technologies are being developed simultaneously. You welcome the challenge of generating ideas and performing analysis based on inputs and requirements that are subject to change.
  • Team oriented: you are comfortable and energized by working in a team with a wide variety of backgrounds and skillsets. You welcome constructive feedback and different perspectives. You desire to truly understand the goals and needs of your teammates.

NICE TO HAVE

  • 1-5 years of professional experience in a similar role
  • Hands on fabrication experience (general machine shop tools such as mills, lathes, etc.)
  • Experience with ANSYS Workbench (or similar FEA software)
  • Proficiency with GD&T
  • Experience with mechanical design of electric motors, electromechanical components or cooling systems

WHY VIRGIN HYPERLOOP

  • Our Benefits: medical (including infertility & mental health), dental, vision, life, FSA, HSA, 401k, and more
