Mechanical Design Engineer
Team and Role Overview
At Relativity, we reimagine the way rockets are built and flown. We are looking for a Vehicle Mechanical Design Engineer to help us achieve our ambitious goal of launching a 3D printed rocket to space.
The Mission/Outcomes and Objectives
To support our mission of changing people’s conception of the way rockets are built and flown, you will be designing critical flight parts, ground support equipment, test fixtures, and tooling for the launch vehicle structure. This encompasses a wide variety of designs (full cycle—from conceptualization, design, prototyping, manufacturing, testing, design, and implementation.)
Here are some examples of projects you could be working on:
- Stage and fairing separation systems
- Large scale structural test rigs
- Shipping and handling equipment
- Thrust structure
- Payload attach fitting & fairing
- Propellant tanks
Your mission will be to design and deliver these projects on time and budget. Additionally, you will be working closely with our additive manufacturing team to make ensure that designs are optimized for our unique additive manufacturing methods.
Candidate Profile
In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is able to lead their own projects into completion. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast paced, aerospace environment, having completed difficult projects while collaborating effectively with other key groups.
On a day to day, you will be working within our CAD program (Creo) as well as performing some FEA Analysis (Nastran and/or ANSYS) or hand calculations. Your designs will also be optimized for our additive manufacturing methods—fundamental knowledge in this is crucial for someone in this role.
Minimum Required Skills and Competencies
- 3+ years of experience in a full cycle design engineering role and a Bachelor’s degree in related discipline
- Significant structural analysis abilities (from hand calculations to advanced analysis)
- Fundamental knowledge of design for Additive Manufacturing
Preferred Skills and Competencies
- 5+ years of experience and an advanced degree
- Extensive experience with Creo/ProE
- Experience using Nastran and/or ANSYS
This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a United States Person as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required.
