THE PURPOSE:

 

The Power Electronics division is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing the electrical power components in the Hyperloop system. These components include variable frequency drives for propulsion and levitation, energy storage systems, charging systems, wiring and cable assemblies, and the associated control hardware and control algorithms. We are seeking a Sr Power Electronics Engineer at our Los Angeles facility to join our diverse, experienced team in designing power electronics and battery systems for one of the most challenging transportation applications on Earth.

 

THE ROLE:

The Lead Power Electronics Engineer will take the ownership of the design, build, integration, test, and validation of the power stage at assembly level for all power converters/inverters. Key components in the power stage include SiC power module, HV busbar assembly, HV bulk caps, gate drives, and HV input/output filters.

Specifically, this position is responsible for:

  • Identifying the requirements at functional level of all related power converters/inverters
  • Conducting benchmarking studies on existing state of arts at both component level and assembly level in various technology areas
  • Providing system/assembly topology and design concepts
  • Conducting performance analysis, including steady state and transient behaviors
  • Evaluating safe margins on system stability, ripple voltage and current, transient voltage overshoot, and thermal
  • Identify system/assembly level fault conditions, analyze failure modes, provide fault management strategies, and implement fault protection mechanism
  • Own all power stage components - including sourcing, build, inventory, and failure logging
  • Identifying system/assembly level test requirements and provide test plan documents
  • Writing test setup design documents, overseeing and commissioning the test setup fixtures
  • Conducting & overseeing all tests at system/assembly level
  • Leading trouble shooting and failure analysis efforts with temporary fix & long term solutions
  • Providing test report documents
  • Providing improvement design (optimal design) based on test results

 

THE CANDIDATE:

The candidate must possess the following characteristics:

  • Ability to make decisions, effectively lead tasks and meet challenging deadlines
  • Experience with developing a product from concept to production
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and interpret a variety of abstract and concrete variables and provide solutions to difficult problems

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong experience in power electronics-related design and development, including familiarity with motor drives, gate drivers, analog circuitry, and magnetics
  • Strong experience in full life-cycle development including component-level requirements and design, component and system-level integration, verification, and validation
  • Ability to work with software and firmware-controlled power converters and power systems
  • Must be willing to work in a high-voltage/high-power lab environment
  • Software skills – Matlab/Simulink, various Ansys Software, Mathcad

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in an engineering-related field
  • Significant experience in power electronics and motor drives with power levels up to 250kW and DC link voltages to 1000V
  • Considerable experience with EMC design and test
  • Knowledgeable with variable speed drives
  • Knowledgeable of system fault management and functional safety
