To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.

THE PURPOSE:

EM Engines team is responsible for delivering propulsion, braking, levitation and guidance engines for our hyperloop system. Longevity of electrical insulation is crucial to electric machines, and insulation failures remain the most likely failure mode over their service life, typically spanning 10-20 years. We are seeking an Insulation Systems Engineer our Los Angeles facility to support our vacuum compatible engine development.

THE ROLE:

The role is two-faceted, consisting of designing insulation systems and carrying out appropriate test programs to experiment with new materials, as well as conducting endurance testing with small scale samples and full-scale engines. Specifically, this position is responsible for:

  • Selecting insulation materials and sizing insulation features based on electrical requirements
  • Working with thermal, mechanical, and production engineers to explore innovative and manufacturable insulation solutions
  • Planning and coordinating material, feature level, and full scale electrical and thermal endurance test programs
  • Finding root causes of failures and ways to mitigate them
  • Supporting Systems Engineering with safety related electrical analyses when need arises
  • Someone who is responsible and accountable for decision-making within scope
  • Requires 5-10% travel time to our Las Vegas test site

THE CANDIDATE:

  • Good candidate shall be a strong individual contributor with advanced technical knowledge as low-pressure insulation endurance is an uncharted territory. Responsibility comes with the opportunity to grow into a leading expert in this field

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, or Automotive/Aeronautical Engineering with an electrical component
  • Advanced knowledge of analytical AC and DC circuit analysis
  • Working knowledge of CAD suite such as NX or SolidWorks (simple designs, drawing reviews)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of common insulation systems and materials in EV and/or power generation field
  • Advanced technical knowledge of relevant insulation ageing standards and experience carrying out tests described therein
  • Hands-on experience of high voltage testing (hipot, surge, partial discharge tests)
  • Electromagnetic field simulations with tools such as ANSYS, JMAG, or COMSOL. You would ramp up our simulation capabilities on insulation front to optimize engine designs
  • Experience of working on electric machines or electronics in low-pressure environment
