SUMMARY
WELL’s Engineering team is looking for a talented Engineering Manager. You will report directly to our Senior Director of Software Engineering.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical part in rapidly scaling up our engineering capacity to meet business demands. You will be directly responsible for ensuring that your agile Scrum teams deliver stories with high quality and velocity in a manner consistent with WELL Health’s technical standards. You will work closely with WELL Product Managers and with the WELL architecture team to ensure such delivery. Your role will focus strictly on team execution, not individual mentoring.
The responsibilities of this position are on the “technical manager” rather than “people manager” end of the engineering manager continuum. Please see our “people manager” posting if you are more interested in those aspects of management.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the performance of fully staffed, external Scrum teams. These teams will have their own Scrum Master, Product Owner, lead, and developers.
- Design and implement team onboarding.
- Communicate WELL coding standards, and put processes in place to ensure these are met.
- Work with WELL Engineers to design the architecture needed for your new features, and then communicate and enforce this implementation on your teams.
- Work with WELL Product Managers and vendor Product Owners to ensure a high quality backlog.
- Interview/select members for your teams from vendor pools.
- Monitor team members and request replacements from vendors as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
- BS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent. Strong technical foundation in software engineering design principles.
- 5+ years experience managing or leading software engineering teams developing SaaS products, at least 2 of which are in an agile environment.
- A critical thinker and frequently spot risks and problems that others fail to catch.
- Understanding of modern backend (microservices, cloud, distributed systems)..
- Proficient in one of the core languages (Java, TypeScript, Python, Golang, etc.)
- Experience building enterprise SaaS products in highly regulated environments with low risk tolerance is highly preferred.
- Must work well under pressure, be sensitive to deadlines, be able to interact in a team environment, and be able to adapt quickly to change.

LOCATION
WELL is headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA with a second office opening later this year in Los Angeles, CA. Today, all WELL positions are remote. Most of WELL’s Engineering team is located on the West Coast, specifically in Southern California. Quarterly travel to one of our locations is required. We are happy to discuss the cadence of visits with the right candidate.
