THE PURPOSE: 

 

The Electromagnetic Systems division is responsible for the design and development of the Hyperloop Propulsion Motor, Levitation and Guidance Systems. These systems are electromechanical in nature and are designed by a highly cross-functional team of exceptional engineers in the areas of Electromagnetics, Mechanical Design, Heat Transfer, Materials Science, Testing, ControlsEmbedded Systems, and Electrical System Modeling. We are seeking candidates with broad skillsets and various levels of experience to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals and work on one of the most challenging transportation applications on Earth, from right here at our Los Angeles facility. 

 

THE ROLE:

The Lead Electromagnetic Design Engineer will: 

  • Utilize engineering principles and knowledge of motor design, magnetic levitation/bearing system design, electromechanical devices, and related engineering disciplines to design complex electromechanical systems 
  • Develop and deliver high-fidelity analytical performance models 
  • Develop and deliver accurate finite-element models utilizing JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, or similar electromagnetic analysis software 
  • Implement optimization procedures for nonlinear systems 
  • Collaborate with other design engineers to develop high-fidelity coupled multi-physics simulations 
  • Produce professional technical literature to inform system design 
  • Work with development, test, and analysis engineers to create detailed component and system models to support fabrication and testing of components and systems  
  • Use of analytic tools (Excel, Matlab/Simulink, SPEED, Ansys, JMAG) to characterize machine performance for sizing, weight, cost, power quality, thermal performance estimates 
  • Support test and production system integration efforts with electromagnetic analysis (define no-fly zones, compute static and dynamic EM loadsand current/loss distributions) 
  • Contribute to custom toolsets for electromagnetic analyses (Matlab, Excel, Python) 
  • Working with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely completion of functional hardware 

 

THE CANDIDATE:

 

The candidate must have engineering experience in electromagnetic design. They must be able to develop elegant solutions to complex problems and thrive in a fast-paced environment. In addition, the candidate must possess the following characteristics:

  • Ability to make decisions, and effectively lead tasks and meet challenging deadlines with general requirements and wide responsibility 
  • Experience developing a product from concept to production  
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to understand and interpret a variety of abstract and concrete variables and provide solutions to difficult problems 

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. in Engineering or related discipline  
  • Experience in at least one of the following: 
    • Rotary electric motors (synchronous, asynchronous)  
    • Linear electric motors 
    • Magnetic bearings 
    • Maglev systems 
  • Familiarity/experience with:  
    • Power electronics 
    • Motor control algorithms 
    • Linear control theory 
    • Design for EMC 
    • DFM, DFA 
    • Experience developing a product from concept to completion 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • M.S. in Engineering or related discipline preferred  
  • Experience with FEA software 
  • Experience with electrical insulation systems 
  • Demonstrated prototyping capabilities
