THE PURPOSE:

 

Contributing to the wider design of Virgin Hyperloop One's (VHO) operational software, embedding best practices and developing the capabilities of our software teams.

The Director of Devops at VHO will lead our Devops team. He or she will direct the development of software infrastructure and tools to automate the delivery of software changes and development tools in a fast-paced agile environment. The role is pivotal in delivering the software platform that supports the operational control system that will give Hyperloop passengers the fast, safe, direct-to-destination service they aspire to, while dealing with real-world events that would otherwise disrupt the service. They will collaborate with leads for software architecture, on- and off-board development to deliver the platform that will make VHO’s hyperloop software a reality. 

 

THE ROLE:

  • Direct the development, implementation, and optimization of the software build, integration, release, and deployment approach
  • Provide the high-level system monitoring with an emphasis on reliability, availability, and failure management/mitigation needs
  • Foster and maintain a software security and safety first mindset throughout the organization
  • Manage a team of experts in software infrastructure-as-code, continuous integration, and deployment
  • Champion software engineering processes and procedures across the organization
  • Lead, grow, mentor, and maintain a team of skilled engineers
  • Keep a customer-focused mindset, prioritizing developer productivity and application up-time
  • Maintain both agile and waterfall environments with safety critical and safety related systems.

 

THE CANDIDATE:

  • Expert-level skills in software Devops
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues in distributed systems
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to present complex ideas in user-friendly ways
  • Self starter with strong interpersonal skills
  • Highly self-motivated with keen attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks effectively in a fast-paced start-up company environment
  • Excellent leadership qualities and temperament

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Significant experience of managing teams to deploy and maintain software development and delivery tool chains, service oriented architectures, data stores, and streaming infrastructures
  • Significant experience of managing data warehouse functions in public (AWS, GCP, etc.) and private clouds
  • Significant understanding of software development fundamentals and best-practices
  • Significant experience in an agile software development environment
  • Experience of provisioning, configuring, and supporting highly-reliable production Linux systems
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing fundamentals and architectures in mission-critical environments
  • Experience with a variety of programming languages and ability to learn new as needed
  • Working proficiency and excellent communication skills in verbal and written English

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Understanding of operating system performance tools, metrics and benchmarks
  • Strong demonstrable ability for automating tasks using popular scripting languages
  • Experience with deployment methodologies. (Docker, Jenkins,)
  • Experience with Testing practices - unit, integration, and end-to-end
  • Experience with source control. (Git, Svn)
  • Experience building or architecting safety-related systems
  • BS or MS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent field
