About the team + role

The Technical Accounting team at Robinhood plays a critical role in interpreting and applying complex accounting standards within a dynamic and rapidly evolving business environment. Our mission is to deliver high-quality insights, maintain strong compliance with U.S. GAAP, and support Robinhood’s goal of democratizing finance for all.

The Director of Technical Accounting will lead the company’s technical accounting function, ensuring compliance with US GAAP, and providing guidance on complex, high impact accounting matters. This role will also oversee strategic initiatives, including accounting policy development, M&A transactions, and process improvements. We are looking for a collaborative and experienced technical accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment; someone who brings deep subject-matter expertise, strong cross-functional partnership skills, and a passion for continuous improvement and delivering high-quality results.

It is preferred that this role is located in one of the office locations listed on this job description which will align with our in-office working environment. This position is only eligible for remote work in limited geographies within the US where we do not have physical office locations. Please connect with your recruiter for more information regarding our in-office philosophy and expectations.

What you’ll do
  • Serve as the accounting lead on complex and emerging business initiatives, working cross-functionally to identify, evaluate, and resolve technical accounting issues. Ensure conclusions are well-reasoned, properly debated, and thoroughly documented in high-quality technical memos.
  • Monitor, interpret, and apply new accounting guidance from the FASB, SEC, and other regulatory bodies; assess the impact on the Company’s financial statements and lead the implementation of relevant changes.
  • Support M&A transactions, including accounting due diligence, purchase price allocation (PPA), integration of acquired entities, and preparation of required SEC filings such as pro forma financial information and disclosures.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with external auditors on complex transactions and technical matters, fostering a transparent and collaborative relationship.
  • Assist in the development, documentation, and maintenance of Company-wide accounting policies, including updates to existing policies and drafting of new policies in response to evolving business needs and accounting standards.
  • Lead or support cross-functional strategic initiatives and special projects, including product launches, new revenue models, or structural reorganizations, ensuring accounting impacts are proactively addressed.
What you bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with an active CPA (or equivalent) and 10+ years of experience in public accounting (Big 4 preferred) and/or technical accounting, with strong exposure to SEC reporting and complex accounting matters.
  • Strong preference for experience in broker-dealer, fintech, or high-growth tech environments.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP, with a proven ability to interpret and apply evolving standards and regulatory guidance across diverse topics.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives, influencing senior stakeholders, and driving alignment across Accounting, Legal, Finance, and Product teams.
  • Strategic, solutions-oriented thinker who thrives in fast-paced settings, with a bias for action, strong communication skills, and high attention to detail. A lifelong learner deeply passionate about technical accounting and emerging industry trends, consistently seeking to improve and evolve in response to a changing regulatory and business landscape.
What we offer
  • Market competitive and pay equity-focused compensation structure
  • 100% paid health insurance for employees with 90% coverage for dependents
  • Annual lifestyle wallet for personal wellness, learning and development, and more!
  • Lifetime maximum benefit for family forming and fertility benefits

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
