About the Role

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Director, Tax to lead and build our global tax function. Reporting to the VP, Finance, this individual will be responsible for all aspects of tax strategy, compliance, reporting, and planning. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader who can shape the function to support Tarsus’s growth, ensure compliance with evolving tax laws, and optimize tax positions across federal, state, and international jurisdictions.

Let’s talk about some of the key responsibilities of the role:

  • Build the tax function at Tarsus to ensure that the function is ready to support future growth of the Company.
  • Manage the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns, including income, sales/use, property, and other applicable taxes.
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and international tax laws, including corporate income tax, indirect tax (VAT, GST, sales tax), and employment taxes.
  • Leads the Financial audit, including SOX compliance, for all tax matters and tax related accounts.
  • Identify and manage tax risks and opportunities, providing guidance on tax audits, disputes, and other significant tax matters.
  • Assist in due diligence and integration activities for mergers, acquisitions, and other business development transactions.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Business Development, and executive leadership to align tax strategy with business goals.
  • Research and interpret changes in tax laws and regulations and provide analysis on impact to the Company’s tax position.
  • Identify and manage tax risks and opportunities, providing guidance on tax audits, disputes, and other significant tax matters.
  • Develop and implement global tax strategies when needed, ensuring alignment with business objectives and driving effective tax planning.

Factors for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive tax experience in life sciences/biotechnology, with a focus on US tax and international compliance.
  • Experience in high-growth companies in the life sciences industry, multinational companies preferably with Big 4 Accounting Firm.
  • Deep knowledge of US Federal, State and local tax laws and regulations. Ex-US tax experience is a plus.
  • Experience in intentional tax planning and compliance including transfer pricing strategy design, specifically for life science companies expanding ex-US.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex tax matters in a concise and related manner to senior executives and non-tax professionals.
  • Proven track record of managing multiple outside service providers and stakeholders in a high-growth company.

A Few Other Details Worth Mentioning:

  • The position will be based in our beautiful Irvine office, complete with a courtyard, snacks, drinks, and occasional catered meals. We provide a hybrid work environment. Remote work is an option.
  • This position reports directly to our VP, Finance
  • Some travel may be required – up to 10%.

At Tarsus, we understand the importance of attracting and retaining top talent. The expected base pay range for this position is $180,000 - $252,000 plus bonus, stock equity, and comprehensive benefits. The base pay range reflects the target range for this position, but individual pay will be determined by additional factors such as job-related skills, experience and relevant education or training.
