KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Pricing Strategy & Product Development

  • Lead the development and maintenance of pricing models across all specialty insurance. segments, leveraging a deep understanding of the E&S market to ensure technical accuracy and commercial competitiveness.  

  • Partner with underwriting, product, and reinsurance teams to launch new products, refine rating structures, and develop profitability targets.

  • Monitor and adjust pricing assumptions in response to loss trends, litigation climate, market conditions, and emerging risks.

  • Analyze both existing and new data sources, including proprietary data and data from third-party providers, to identify trends, assess risk, and develop new product opportunities.

  • Act as the leading actuarial business expert for E&S to establish actuarial methodologies, data analysis, and performance monitoring.

  • Continuously improve processes in order to improve accuracy and efficiency of models.

Portfolio Management & Profitability Analysis

  • Oversee portfolio performance reviews for all specialty lines, analyzing rate adequacy, loss ratio trends, and segment profitability.

  • Drive segmentation strategies to identify growth and remediation opportunities across geographies, industries, and distribution channels.

  • Advise leadership on underwriting appetite and capital allocation based on actuarial insights and risk-adjusted returns.

  • Partner closely with Underwriting, Claims and other stakeholders to ensure risks are properly evaluated and managed.

Reserving & Financial Planning

  • Collaborate with reserving actuaries and finance to ensure adequate and defensible loss reserves.

  • Provide input on quarterly loss ratio projections, planning assumptions, and capital models.

  • Support statutory and GAAP reporting, audit processes, and regulatory inquiries related to actuarial estimates.

Reinsurance & Risk Transfer

  • Support structuring and evaluation of reinsurance programs in collaboration with Chief Underwriting Officer and Business Unit Leaders.

  • Effectively simulate and model retention levels, layer structures, and catastrophe exposures to inform optimal risk transfer strategies.

  • Analyze historical experience to inform negotiation strategy and reinsurer engagement.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Establish strategic vision, direction, and operating models within the Actuarial department for ICW Specialty.

  • Build a high-performing team of actuaries supporting pricing, reserving, and modeling functions across all specialty lines, while in the near-term establishing strong relationships and partnering closely with the ICW’s Commercial Actuarial department to establish the new actuarial models for Specialty.

  • Coach and mentor Actuarial talent to motivate high performance and develop new skills. 

  • Foster a culture of analytical rigor, innovation, collaboration, and proactive risk assessment.

  • Drive collaboration with underwriting, claims, finance, and operations to support enterprise decision-making.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or related field.

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in commercial and specialty insurance, with 3 years in a leadership role.

  • 15+ years’ experience with 5 years in a leadership role preferred. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Associate of the Casualty Actuary Society (ACAS) required

  • Fellow of the Casualty Actuary Society (FCAS) preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Proven expertise in E&S lines, complex risks, and specialty product pricing.

  • Proficient in programming languages (R, Python, etc) and SQL for programming Actuarial databases and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).

  • Strong business orientation and ability to communicate actuarial concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Deep understanding of the unique characteristics and challenges of the E&S Market.

  • Thorough knowledge of actuarial models and ability to assess results.

  • Strong technical actuarial skills: Proficiency in pricing, reserving, and data analysis.

  • Superb communication and collaboration skills with demonstrated track record working collaboratively with various stakeholders to solve complex business problems.

  • Strategic thinker who embraces ambiguity and can establish a clear vision for the actuarial function of ICW’s Specialty division.

  • Willingness to work hands-on while establishing a new line of business and building a team.

  • Outstanding leadership capabilities with proven track record of successfully leading high-performing Actuary teams.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time between ICW’s San Diego and Atlanta offices. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Office environment – no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier and other standard office equipment.  The noise level in the office is usually moderate.

The current range for this position is

$160,745.90 - $287,738.43

This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses.  If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
