CRIO (Clinical Research IO) is a health tech company helping pharma, biotech, research sites, and academic research centers streamline regulatory workflows with one system and a single source of clinical data capture. Our modules allow sites to capture data electronically in real-time, providing data managers and monitors with enhanced transparency, and enabling remote monitoring by sponsors and CROs.

CRIO’s eSource and CTMS system is a leading, modern, enterprise platform built for clinical research sites. Since CRIO’s launch in 2015, CRIO has established the leading brand position in eSource and has won close to 50% of the emerging class of enterprise-grade site networks, many of whom are backed by institutional investors such as VC, PE and corporations. CRIO has achieved the attached metrics, all with little to no serious outbound sales or marketing.

About the role:

The Director of Software Quality is a senior engineering leader responsible for the strategy, execution, and organizational health of the software quality function at CRIO. This is a transformational leadership role where you will define and execute a truly holistic quality strategy that will have a real impact on patient outcomes and accelerate company growth. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this role directly manages the test automation team and serves as the primary owner of automated quality across the platform.

The Director will oversee an active engagement with an external test automation vendor, partner with application engineering teams on coverage strategy, and collaborate with the Director of Quality (manual QA) as a peer. This role is expected to expand in scope over time to encompass the broader quality organization.

Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage and develop a team of three test automation engineers, providing clear goals, regular feedback, and career growth opportunities.
  • Define team standards, tooling, and engineering practices for test automation.
  • Mentor engineers across skill levels and identify opportunities to grow the team's technical capabilities over time.

Automation Strategy & Execution

  • Own and drive the test automation roadmap in partnership with the VP of Engineering.
  • Lead the design and evolution of automation frameworks, infrastructure, and CI/CD integration across the platform.
  • Establish coverage standards and ensure alignment between automation investment and product risk.

Vendor Management

  • Manage the relationship with an external test automation partner responsible for restructuring CRIO's automation framework.
  • Evaluate architectural deliverables, enforce milestone accountability, and escalate risks proactively.
  • Ensure the engagement produces durable, maintainable outcomes that the internal team can own and extend.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with application engineering teams to triage coverage gaps and align testing priorities with product risk.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Quality to develop and execute unified, holistic automated and manual testing strategies, reduce duplication, and ensure consistent standards across the quality function.
  • Contribute to engineering planning, sprint reviews, and architectural discussions as a quality advocate.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 7+ years of experience in software quality engineering, with a focus on test automation for commercial SaaS applications.
  • 2+ years in a formal leadership or people management role, with demonstrated success developing engineers and driving team outcomes.
  • Senior-level command of Java and/or JavaScript, with deep experience designing and maintaining API and UI automation suites.
  • Proven track record owning and delivering on a test automation roadmap.
  • Experience managing external vendor or contractor relationships, including technical evaluation of deliverables.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with experience working across engineering, product, and operations stakeholders.

Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical research, or other regulated software environments; familiarity with 21 CFR Part 11 is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud-native application architectures and CI/CD tooling, including containerized and parallel test execution.
  • Background navigating a transition from manual-heavy to automation-first quality practices.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.

Benefits & Perks:

  • Work from anywhere
  • Unlimited PTO
  • 401k company match
  • Healthcare
  • Dental
  • Vision (Company Paid 100%)
  • Life insurance
  • Professional development
  • Work From Home Expense Reimbursement

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
