We provide a range of innovative cloud-based solutions to empower individuals and businesses to share, access, and collaborate on their files seamlessly. Engineering leaders are pivotal in shaping our mission of building a more enlightened way of working—where everyone can unleash their creative potential without constraints.

We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead a critical portfolio comprising our Corporate Infrastructure, Integrations, and Software Engineering teams. You’ll oversee multiple teams delivering essential internal tools, services, and integrations that power Dropbox’s operations and connect our products with the broader SaaS ecosystem. You’ll work closely with your direct reports, cross-functional partners, and other teams to build the future of Dropbox. Our team culture rewards a bias for action, engineering partnership in defining our strategy, and efficient operational excellence. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a passion for driving results in a collaborative, virtual-first environment.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

  • Cultivate a collaborative and inclusive culture, championing team members and upholding our company values.
  • Lead and grow a set of high-performing engineering teams.
  • Drive the strategy, execution, and delivery for Dropbox’s corporate infrastructure, integrations platform, and internal software systems.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional leaders in IT, Security, Product, and Business Systems to align technical investments with company priorities.
  • Champion engineering excellence, setting high standards for architecture, code quality, and operational rigor.
  • Develop and manage roadmaps, ensuring your teams deliver high-impact solutions that are scalable, secure, and resilient.
  • Attract, retain, and develop top-tier engineering talent, while actively mentoring future leaders.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics) or equivalent technical experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of people management experience with an engineering team

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
