About 1Password

At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Extended Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 165,000 businesses and millions of people trust us to provide seamless, secure access to their most critical information.

If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

Our Experience, Design and Research (EDR) team is at the heart of this mission—transforming complex security challenges into elegant, human-centered experiences. We value collaboration, curiosity, and a strong design culture built on customer empathy and innovation.

We’re looking for a visionary design leader to guide two of the most important and transformative pillars at 1Password: Extended Access Management (XAM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As Director of Product Design for XAM & AI, you’ll set the long-term design strategy for how organizations secure identities, manage access, and unlock new value through our Extended Access Management product suite and AI-enabled experiences.

This is a high-impact role at the intersection of security, platform technologies, and AI innovation. You’ll connect customer needs, market trends, and 1Password’s strategy to shape products that redefine what’s possible in identity, authentication, and intelligent security. You’ll scale and empower a talented design team, build strong cross-functional partnerships, and represent 1Password externally as a leader in the future of secure, AI-driven platforms.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of B2B SaaS product design leadership experience, ideally in cybersecurity, identity, or enterprise platform products.

  • 3+ years working on AI, developer, or platform-related products highly desirable; proven ability to design for highly technical domains.

  • Proven track record of launching high-impact security and/or AI-enabled products in dynamic, competitive markets.

  • Deep understanding of identity and access management, authentication trends, and platform technologies.

  • Demonstrated expertise in recruiting, coaching, and scaling design leaders and ICs.

  • Strong strategic thinking: ability to connect insights across domains and translate them into compelling product design strategies.

  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills to influence executives, inspire teams, and represent design externally.

  • A growth mindset and radical ownership: resilient in ambiguity, decisive under pressure, and motivated by transformative impact.

What you can expect:

  • Lead and grow the design teams responsible for XAM and AI product experiences, driving end-to-end design vision and execution.

  • Define program-level plans (12–18 months ahead) that connect strategy with execution, ensuring design accelerates product innovation and adoption.

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, GTM, Research, and Data to shape roadmaps that balance customer usability and business impact.

  • Champion the customer voice in a technically complex domain, embedding empathy, simplicity, and security into every product decision.

  • Build and mentor a high-performing design organization, developing leaders and scaling impact across teams.

  • Represent 1Password externally in the design, security, and AI communities through thought leadership, speaking engagements, and industry partnerships.

  • Advocate for design at the executive level, ensuring clear alignment across functions and driving measurable outcomes.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and comfort operating in 0→1 environments — you thrive in ambiguity, move quickly to clarity, and drive new product experiences from concept to launch.

  • Champion AI adoption and experimentation within the Product & Design org.

Month 1

  • Immerse yourself in 1Password’s culture, tools, and design principles, while gaining a deep understanding of the XAM and AI product pillars and their role in the company strategy.

  • Build relationships with your cross-functional partners in Product, Engineering, GTM, etc., aligning on current priorities and challenges.

  • Meet with key customers and stakeholders to understand their needs, expectations, and the evolving cybersecurity landscape.

  • Begin shaping an initial vision and design strategy for XAM & AI, identifying opportunities to bring clarity and direction.

Month 3

  • Establish yourself as a trusted design leader and partner to product and engineering leads, actively influencing roadmaps with customer insights and market signals.

  • Begin scaling your team’s capabilities: recruiting, mentoring, and developing designers and design managers.

  • Routinely provide feedback and guidance on design work, ensuring both quality and alignment to business priorities.

  • Contribute visibly to org-wide rituals and executive discussions, representing design’s impact on security and AI strategy.

Month 6+

  • Own and advocate for the long-term design vision of the XAM and AI product areas, inspiring alignment among cross-functional executives.

  • Operate as a key voice in shaping 1Password’s future in identity, access, and intelligent security, influencing company-level priorities.

  • Mentor and empower design leaders on your team, setting a high bar for quality, strategic thinking, and operational excellence.

  • Represent 1Password externally as a thought leader in design, cybersecurity, and AI — contributing to the broader community and strengthening our reputation in the market.

We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. Embracing the future of AI isn't just encouraged at 1Password—it's an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
