At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

Netflix's advertising business – spanning the ad-supported plan, ad sales, programmatic and data partnerships, and measurement – is scaling quickly, and privacy and data protection risk is scaling with it. We are looking for a Director to lead privacy legal support for Netflix's global advertising business: advising Ads, Product, and Measurement teams on data collection, targeting, and partner data flows; embedding privacy-by-design into new ad products and partnerships; and helping the business grow revenue responsibly and in compliance with an increasingly complex U.S. and global privacy landscape, in addition to being a great team player and supporting the team across other privacy and data security areas as they arise.

This role will ideally be based in our Los Angeles or Los Gatos, California office. We will also consider candidates based in New York.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary privacy legal advisor to Netflix's global advertising organization (Ad Sales, Ad Product, Ads Partnerships, and Measurement), partnering from ideation through launch on new ad products, features, and partner integrations.
  • Advise on the application of U.S. federal and state privacy laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA and other comprehensive state privacy statutes, COPPA, VPPA, TCPA), as well as the EU GDPR and other global laws related to advertising data collection, targeting, and measurement.
  • Provide legal guidance on programmatic advertising and DSP/SSP relationships, data clean room arrangements, and first- and third-party data-sharing structures used for ad targeting and measurement.
  • Review and negotiate privacy and data protection terms in ad tech, data, and measurement vendor/partner agreements, working closely with Commercial and Partnerships Legal.
  • Advise on consent management, opt-out/opt-in mechanics, and use of pseudonymous or hashed identifiers in ads data flows, partnering with Privacy Engineering and Product.
  • Support responses to regulatory inquiries and self-regulatory matters (e.g., NAI, DAA) and help assess litigation risk tied to online behavioral advertising.
  • Track evolving U.S. state privacy legislation and regulatory developments relevant to advertising (targeted-advertising opt-outs, sensitive data rules, data minimization) and help shape Netflix's position.
  • Partner with Global Privacy Legal, Privacy Engineering, and Public Policy to keep UCAN ads privacy practices aligned with Netflix's global privacy program and standards.
  • Train and advise Ads, Product, and Measurement stakeholders on privacy requirements and practical risk mitigation.
  • Build and scale privacy review processes so legal support keeps pace with the growth of the UCAN ads business.
  • Provide other privacy and cybersecurity legal guidance as needed in adjacent areas and to help foster a global privacy program across Netflix.

Qualifications
  • J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.
  • 10+ years of combined law firm and in-house experience, with meaningful in-house time at a technology, media, or ad tech company advising on advertising and marketing issues.
  • Substantive depth in global privacy and advertising law – CCPA/CPRA and other state privacy statutes, COPPA, VPPA, TCPA – and working familiarity with EU GDPR, Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), and other global laws.
  • Direct experience advising an advertising, ad tech, or martech business: programmatic/DSP-SSP ecosystems, data clean rooms, identifier and cookie-deprecation strategy, and measurement/attribution partnerships.
  • Comfort partnering with engineering teams on technical privacy controls for ads data – consent management, data separation, pseudonymization.
  • Sound, risk-calibrated judgment that balances legal risk against business growth in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
  • Experience negotiating privacy and data protection terms in ad tech and measurement commercial agreements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate privacy concepts for both business and engineering audiences.
  • Experience building or scaling a privacy program or practice area, ideally in a regional or business-vertical lead capacity.
  • Familiarity with self-regulatory advertising frameworks (NAI, DAA) and IAB standards is a plus.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
