About The Role
We are seeking individuals to join as Director of Eastern Strategy and Origination, reporting to the Senior Director of Origination. The ideal candidate will lead strategy and origination for our ERCOT, MISO and SPP markets including market analysis, marketing BESS projects, negotiating and structuring BESS offtake agreements for both physical and financial products, and developing and owning customer relationships. In addition, given the growing importance of large load offtake in this region, this individual will develop and lead our data center strategy

This person will also play a lead role in contracting mid-/late-stage development as well as operational projects, portfolio management and reporting efforts, leading RFP response and financial model coordination, and guiding new market and new customer strategy. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of the fast-growing energy storage sector and contribute to a high-performing, entrepreneurial team with a robust project development pipeline.

Core Responsibilities
  • Own Eastern market strategy across ERCOT, MISO, and SPP — including coverage of IRPs, transmission plans, regulatory proceedings, market trends, and key customer activity.
  • Lead origination and power marketing efforts for esVolta’s Eastern portfolio through contracting revenue for esVolta’s development pipeline and operational portfolio.
  • Build, own, and expand key customer relationships with utilities, co-ops, munis, retailers, traders, C&I offtakers, and hyperscaler/data center operators; serve as primary counterpart for negotiations and long-term commercial strategy.
  • Lead structuring, negotiation, and execution of physical and financial offtake agreements including tolls, capacity sales, hedges, and customized BESS-specific structures—working closely with legal, finance, and executive leadership.
  • Guide greenfield development strategy by identifying high-value interconnection points and project sites to meet emerging BESS project demand.
  • Support M&A efforts to align project pipeline with market strategy.
  • Lead cross-functional financial modeling efforts for commercial structuring and investment decisions; validate assumptions, coordinate with finance, EPC, and development teams on valuation, and drive the commercial case for investment committee approvals.
  • Represent the company externally at key industry engagements, including utility stakeholder processes, RTO working groups, conferences, and regulatory forums.
  • Present to the Board and investment committee on key approvals and decisions.

Skills & Qualifications
  • 7-10 years of experience in the power and utilities sector, with a focus on project development, business development, wholesale energy markets, data centers/corporate offtake, and energy storage.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of ERCOT, MISO and SPP market dynamics, including transmission and resource planning, procurement and offtake agreements, and wholesale energy market operations.
  • Strong existing relationships and previous lead deal experience with utilities, C&I offtakers/brokers, and data centers in ERCOT, SPP and MISO.
  • Proven experience structuring, negotiating, and executing BESS offtake agreements or similar commercial transactions (i.e. ISDAs, ESAs, VPPAs, RSAs, etc.).
  • Strong financial modeling, presentation and quantitative analysis skills, including the ability to advocate for decision-making at the board/investor level.
  • Excellent organization, communication and presentation skills with the ability to distill complex issues clearly.
  • People manager with a proven ability to manage direct reports while being an individual contributor.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented, and detail-driven with a strong work ethic, integrity and intellectual curiosity.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
