Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal Leadership Institute is designed to help business leaders master a world of accelerating change.  To succeed, they need access to accurate, unbiased and up-to-date information — which the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones have traditionally provided them — and a deep network of peer executives to discuss, debate and decide on how to navigate the biggest challenges that businesses face today — whether from disruptive new technologies, an evolving geopolitical landscape, a changing energy paradigm, rising stakeholder demands, or shifting workplace norms. The Leadership Institute consists of executive peer communities, a variety of content and experiences for members, and unique access to data only available within Dow Jones.

Role Description:

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Membership Content & Engagement Director to take a hands-on role in creating new content experiences that will increase member retention and drive engagement for our executive peer communities. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and creating content and other program experiences that keep our members engaged, satisfied and loyal over the long term. As part of this role, you will be charged with performing competitive research analysis on an ongoing basis, monitoring and measuring the impact of the engagement content strategies and meeting our membership KPIs. You will also play an important role in operationalizing the Institute’s partnerships to turn them into engaging experiences for our members.

This role reports to the Institute’s SVP & Head of Content with a strong dotted line to the VP of Membership Operations. You also will work cross-functionally with marketing, sales, product and data teams to optimize the member experience, enhance value propositions, and implement retention initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write & produce compelling content that engages our Council members across platforms — from events and polls to emails and newsletters.

  • Take a lead role helping define the “purpose” of all Institute events.

  • Help parlay Institute partnerships into powerful new member experiences — working across the Institute to operationalize these programs.

  • Conduct competitive market research to keep our membership experiences cutting-edge.

  • Monitor and measure the impact of these programs and make recommendations to increase effectiveness as measured by member retention, growth and satisfaction.

  • Represent the Institute as needed to support membership growth and satisfaction, including leading workshops at Events, helping launch new Councils and assisting with member support.

  • Lead and manage teams cross-functionally as well as future direct reports as the role may require.

Success Requirements:

Success in this role requires the ability to take the powerful content within Dow Jones and turn it into engaging experiences for members, a deep understanding of member behavior, data-driven decision-making, and a passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences. You will be responsible for creating content and programs that not only grow membership and increase retention but also enhance their overall engagement and lifetime value.

Key Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Content, Business, or Marketing, MBA preferred

  • 10+ years of experience  in content, engagement, and program management, ideally within a membership-based business.

  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful member retention strategies that reduce churn and enhance customer lifetime value (LTV).

  • Strong analytical skills with experience using customer data, analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Tableau), and A/B testing to inform decisions.

  • Expertise in customer segmentation, behavioral analysis, and data-driven marketing strategies.

  • Experience with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot) and engagement platforms (e.g., Intercom, Braze, Zendesk).

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team, set goals, and drive results.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Strong project management skills

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
