Director of Marketing at Kilo

Location: USA East Coast / Western Europe

Kilo is the all-in-one, open-source agentic engineering platform. We're #1 on OpenRouter, have 1.5M+ active developers, and have processed over 25 trillion tokens. We're growing fast, shipping constantly, and building in public.

The Role

As our first Director of Marketing, you will transition Kilo from week-to-week tactics to a cohesive, high-scale engine. You are the single leader owning strategy and execution across DevRel, Analyst Relations, Product Marketing, and Demand Gen.

Kilo isn't looking for a traditional corporate marketer. We need a technical marketing leader who can go toe-to-toe with senior engineers, craft spicy narratives that cut through the AI hype, and build a durable GTM playbook.

You will be responsible for positioning Kilo as the category-defining AI coding platform against giants and well-funded startups alike.

What You’ll Own
  • Pipeline & Growth: Identify, test, and scale high-ROI channels. You’ll move beyond our current influencer and video success to build a predictable engine for enterprise qualified leads.

  • Category Narrative: Sharpen our positioning. You need to define exactly why a developer or CTO chooses Kilo over Cursor or adjacent tools in the AI toolchain.

  • Technical Storytelling: Produce bold, "no-fluff" content. You’ll lead the charge in showing (not just telling) how Kilo solves complex architectural problems.

  • Full-Stack Leadership: Manage and mentor our expanded marketing team (DevRel, AR, PMM) while staying "T-shaped"—ready to dive deep into execution when needed.

  • Analyst & Market Presence: Own our relationship with firms like Gartner and ensure Kilo is top-of-mind for enterprise buyers.

Qualifications
  • Deep Technical Acumen: You understand the SDLC, AI tokenomics, and the dev-tool landscape. You can write for an audience that hates being "marketed to."

  • Startup Grit: You have a track record of building marketing functions from 0 to 1 in fast-paced, high-agency environments.

  • Analytical Rigor: You make decisions based on data, but you have the instinct to move fast even when the data is imperfect.

  • Unconventional Thinking: You prefer "spicy," authentic tactics over boring, safe corporate playbooks.

  • Communication: Exceptional clarity in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

  • Location: Remote (Strong preference for ET, CT, or Western Europe time zones).

Your Timeline at Kilo
  • Week 1: Dive into the product and community. Ship your first impactful marketing initiative.

  • Month 1: Be fully self-sufficient. Deliver a data-informed plan for pipeline growth and channel focus that the team is already executing.

  • Month 3: Established a durable marketing playbook that looks 6 months ahead. You have successfully sharpened our competitive positioning against the market.

  • Year 1: Kilo is recognized as the category leader in AI coding agents, with a scaled, high-ROI engine driving consistent enterprise growth.

The Reality of Working at Kilo

We want to be transparent about what it takes to succeed here.

  • We Work Exceptionally Hard: We are ambitious, and ambition requires effort. Most people who do not succeed at Kilo fail because they underestimate the work ethic required. We’re not a 9-9-6 shop, but we do expect you to bring energy, intensity, and grit every single day.

  • High Accountability: We don't hide behind vanity metrics. You will have a number (WAUzer), and you will be responsible for hitting it.

  • A Driven Culture: We foster healthy competition and a shared will to win. We support each other, but we also push each other to be the absolute best.

Why Join Us?

At Kilo Code, you’ll have a massive impact on the future of how software is built. We value output, autonomy, and a "hungry but humble" mindset. If you’re a technical marketer who wants to lead a rocket ship, we want to talk.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
