Job Purpose 
The Director of Marketing, Events & Digital Communications leads AFT’s branding, marketing strategy and national paid media campaigns.  This position manages the Marketing Division and oversees national websites, email, social, and outreach channels with the help of a team of communication specialists.

Position Summary 
The Director of Marketing, Events & Digital Communications serves as AFT’s brand leader, driving integrated marketing and digital strategies that expand reach, deepen stakeholder engagement, and increase supporter growth. In partnership with the Vice President for Communications, the Director leads multi-channel campaigns, signature engagement initiatives, and creative content development to advance the organization’s mission and visibility, while overseeing team performance, metrics, and marketing best practices.

Duties & Responsibilities
Project/Program Leadership and Execution

  • Design, create, and improve content for national dissemination.
  • Maintain the AFT brand, refine and enforce the brand standards and keep AFT on the cutting edge.
  • Test the health of the brand with key audiences and against competition.
  • Lead supporter acquisition strategy and coordinate cross-department tactics to grow the database.
  • Monitor the competitive environment, market changes and political developments and leverage trends and patterns to maximize communication impact.

Collaboration and Organizational Alignment

  • Fosters internal and cross-divisional collaboration through informed guidance, coaching, and knowledge and/or expertise in relevant areas.
  • Collaborates with other Directors and Deputy Directors on cross-divisional efforts and works to break down siloes within the organization to ensure effective execution of strategic initiatives.

 
Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Identifies, develops, and promotes new programmatic and operational initiatives that drive organizational growth, improve effectiveness, enhance efficiency, quality, and engagement, while encouraging and supporting a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and adaptability.

 
Communication Leadership 

  • Leads the execution of national Communications strategy as tailored to divisional priorities and capabilities. 
  • Ensures the production of written and other materials to communicate division’s work with target audiences. 
  • Supports strong collaboration with the National Communications team to maintain consistency and alignment across all internal and external messaging.
  • Develop compelling messaging and storytelling opportunities across mediums, formats and geographies.
  • Establish new communications channels and grow effective channels to reach new audiences.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (master’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related field) preferred and 10+ years of progressively responsible national PR, communications, or marketing experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in marketing, communications, advertising and media relations as proven through portfolio examples and published samples.
  • Outstanding communication skills, strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing teams, including providing direction, supporting staff development, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook) trends, analytics and planning tools. 
  • Experience managing e-mail marketing, online fundraising, event registration, and digital advocacy platforms in non-profit or cause marketing role.
  • Experience directing websites, including building new websites and updating webpages, creating workflows, planning staff resources, etc. 
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills -- able to establish and implement systems and identify resources to ensure successful on-time completion of projects. 
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience using a diverse range of tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Canva are required. 
  • Collaborative and strategic leader who builds alignment and engagement through influence.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional work in the evenings or on weekends may be required to meet deadlines.
  • This position requires domestic travel, estimated at approximately 4 to 5 trips per year, primarily for conferences, meetings, and other organizational events.

This position has supervisory responsibility for:

  • Social Media & Marketing Manager
  • Marketing Coordinator

Compensation
American Farmland Trust offers excellent vacation, medical, retirement and other benefits. The salary range for this position is from $120,000 to $130,000 based upon experience.
