About Point Foundation

Point Foundation is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ+ and ally students, supporting 1,250 scholars in the 2026–27 academic year. Point provides scholars with financial support, leadership and career development, and a lifelong community of students, alumni, and leaders in every field and industry.

Point’s mission is to support the educational aspirations of LGBTQ+ and ally students to become impactful leaders in their lives, careers, and communities.  Point is proud to be a top-rated nonprofit by watchdog groups including Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and the Better Business Bureau.

We pursue excellence in all we do and are building for scale — growing the number of scholars we serve, expanding leadership and career development opportunities, and innovating on the systems and technology that let a nimble team reach further every year.

Position Overview

Point Foundation seeks a visionary, results-driven Director of Marketing & Communications to dramatically elevate the organization's national profile and public presence. This is a strategic leadership role for a builder — someone who combines bold thinking with hands-on execution and can cut through a crowded media landscape to make Point Foundation's voice heard. Elevating national awareness of Point's mission and impact is a top organizational priority — and so is deepening relationships with existing and prospective donors through compelling storytelling that brings Point's scholars, alumni, and work to life. The Director will be the architect and driver of both.

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer - Kevin Wright

Status: Full time, exempt

Supervises: Marketing & Communications direct report(s); retained agencies and consultants across PR, web, SEO/SEM, and social

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy & Organizational Leadership:

  • Set and lead Point's integrated marketing and communications strategy across earned media, paid media, social media, digital, and brand.
  • Define and steward Point's brand voice, key messages, and narrative, ensuring consistency across every channel and elevating national positioning.
  • Partner with the CEO and COO, bringing strategic recommendations and performance data that drive key decisions.
  • Lead, coach, and develop Marketing & Communications direct report(s), building internal capacity to execute at scale.
  • Collaborate closely with Development and Program Departments to build internal resources for managing departmental marketing and communications needs.
  • Manage the department budget, allocating resources across staff, consultants, paid media, and production with fiscal accountability. Continually evaluate internal capabilities and capacity to determine the optimal balance between in-house execution and external agency support.

Earned Media & Public Relations:

  • Own the annual earned media strategy and editorial calendar; direct the retained PR agency on KPIs while personally pitching scholar, alumni, and mission stories to national, regional, and LGBTQ+ press.
  • Work with retained PR agency to build an executive visibility program for the CEO — high-profile interviews, speaking platforms, and thought leadership.
  • Partner with Program and Development staff to shape media-ready scholar and alumni narratives, handling those stories with privacy, dignity, and consent; translating coverage data into strategy through a regular reporting cadence.

Brand, Content & Digital Presence:

  • Own Point's brand identity end-to-end, developing and enforcing brand guidelines and style guides so every internal and external communication reflects a consistent, mission-aligned voice.
  • Drive pointfoundation.org strategy, user experience, content governance, and SEO to grow traffic, scholarship applications, and donor engagement; manage retained web contractors against deliverables, timelines, and brand standards.
  • Manage integrated digital marketing across owned, earned, and paid channels — paid campaigns, SEO/SEM, email acquisition, and lead nurturing in partnership with retained marketing agencies.
  • Oversee production of all organizational collateral — fundraising, program, event, and digital content — building scalable templates and workflows that adhere to brand guidelines.

Social Media & Integrated Campaigns:

  • Set the vision and strategy for Point's social media, overseeing day-to-day execution through staff and retained consultants and integrating social with earned media, campaigns, and storytelling.
  • Establish a data-driven performance culture — analytics dashboards, KPI tracking across channels, audience research, and competitive analysis that inform strategy.
  • Serve as the organizational authority on message consistency, reviewing and approving all public-facing communications.
  • Lead signature campaigns from concept through launch, directing staff and consultants and measuring impact.
  • Drive Point's annual impact reporting and organizational recognition efforts — award submissions, rankings, and third-party acknowledgments that elevate Point's national profile.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in marketing, communications, or public relations, including 3+ years in a senior or leadership role at a nonprofit, mission-driven, or similarly complex organization.
  • Senior-level experience managing a team, a department budget, and external agencies simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ownership across both strategy and execution.
  • Cross-functional leadership: able to manage up, down, and across a complex organization, and to manage internal staff and external agencies alike.
  • Intellectual curiosity and drive to stay current on best-in-class marketing and communications practices.
  • Proven track record of securing earned media coverage in national, regional, and trade outlets; existing media relationships a strong plus.
  • Fluency in digital analytics — Google Analytics, social insights, email metrics — and the ability to translate data into strategy.
  • Hands-on experience with SEO, SEM, inbound marketing platforms (HubSpot or equivalent), and CMS management.
  • AI fluency and comfort using AI tools to drive efficiency and innovation across marketing and communications work.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling across formats and audiences, from press releases and op-eds to social posts and donor appeals.
  • Strong executive presence and verbal communication, including presenting to boards, senior leadership, and media; comfort serving as a spokesperson.
  • Highly organized and deadline-driven, managing multiple high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive organizational information.
  • Deep familiarity with the LGBTQ+ and ally community, issues, advocacy landscape, and media ecosystem.
  • Passionate about Point's mission and enthusiasm about communicating the organization's philosophy, mission, and values.
  • Commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in all areas of responsibility and across the organization.
  • Preferred: change management experience, AP style fluency, prior nonprofit experience or exposure, and lived experience or existing relationships within the LGBTQ+ community.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
